How to get your organisation started on Twitter

Twitter has hit the headlines and becomethe social media phenomena of themoment. From Barack Obama to BritneySpears, people are capitalising on its abilityto publish messages to the masses in 140characters or less. It only takes secondsto write and seconds to read. But whatrelevance does this new platform havefor business and how are organisationscashing in on the opportunities?
Among many organisations Twitter seems to have anunjustied reputation as a service or socially ineptteenagers. Yet properly used and eectively targeted,Twitter can add signicant value. This paper looks atthe benets or business and how Twitter, and indeedother micro blogging services, can be used to bettercommunicate and engage with stakeholders. It showshow businesses can get started in this space, what andhow to communicate, as well as providing tips to helpyou get your messages seen by the right audiences andstart building a ollowing. And the title o the document? It was rom the ormer, almost US Vice President Sarah Palin tweeted on10 November 2008

Founded in Caliornia in 2006, Twitter is a micro bloggingservice which encourages users to post regular statusupdates and interesting acts or links using 140 charactersor less. Micro blogging is in reality part blog and part socialnetwork and, be warned, very addictive.Twitter has leapt to prominence over the past 12 monthsas high prole individuals and organisations have adoptedit in their marketing and communications strategies.President Obama’s innovative use o social mediaduring the general election has been well documentedhttp://tinyurl.com/d8fwl As at March 2009, the top 10 most ollowedTwitter accounts, many o which started less thana year ago, were:

This document is meant as an introductory guide only to anever changing medium and will be updated on a regular basis.

Why should my organisation get involved?
“I know, it’s totally silly andshallow, but that’s precisely  why Twitter is on its way to becoming the nextkiller app.”
This quote is drawn rom an article by Anita Hamiltonpublished in TIME Magazine, 27 March 2008. It showshow ar Twitter has come in a very short period o time.It was Twitpic that broke the news story o the planecrashing into the Hudson river to the world. A passengeron a erry heading to help took a photo on his phoneand posted it to Twitpic 15 minutes beore any majornews outlet broke the story.http://twitpic.com/135xaI a Twitter application can do this, what can it do oryour organisation, and more importantly, what might thecost o not getting involved be?Many organisations will take the approach that they willwait and see how micro blogging develops beore theyget involved. These same organisations and individualswithin them, said the same about social networking (inact they may still be) and probably the web beore that. The simple act is that the speed o both adoption andchange in this space is such that most organisationscannot aord to risk not getting involved. Moreover, it is acceptable to engage with this spacenow and make a ew mistakes as you learn your wayaround, largely because most people are also learningtheir way around Twitter. This will not be the case ina year rom now when people will not be so orgiving. And nally, and most directly, the chances arethat engaging with Twitter is almost certain to addvalue to your organisation as a whole, even i thatengagement does nothing more than bring yourmessages to a new audience.  A UK based digital agency* has de ined a useul listo ways through which Twitter can add value to anorganisation, which we have reordered, adaptedand explained a little dierently:
1.Use Twitter to listen2.Use Twitter to ask questions3.Use Twitter to extend your contacts4.Use Twitter to invigorate your existing contacts 5.Use Twitter to sell your IP 6.Use Twitter to sell your productsor services 7.Use Twitter to help yourcustomers do all of the above
