IP-based 6LoWPAN Networks for AMI
Zach Shelby
Introduction
This white paper explains how to utilize Sensinode IP-based 6LoWPAN (Internet Protocol) andRadioCrafts wireless module technology in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) applications. Withthis technology, a completely IPv6-based low-power local wireless network integrated directly intomodern service-provider AMI. This paper looks at the AMI applications, capabilities and benefits possible with Sensinode and RadioCrafts products.
AMI with end-to-end IPv6 technology
The market for Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and more Advanced Metering Infrastructures (AMI)has been growing tremendously this decade. Utilities are under pressure from legislation demanding real-time reading of meters, for example by 2012 in the EU and even earlier in some countries. At the sametime demands on energy and other infrastructure call for more intelligent interaction with energyconsumers, for example real-time consumer information, demand response, building automationintegration and many more services. With Sensinode’s breakthrough IPv6 technology for very low-power wireless networking, it is now possible for the first time, to have a fully end-to-end IP communications infrastructure including low- power mesh networking between meters, automation systems, and sub-meters. The IEEE 802.15.4standard at 2.4 GHz offers the ideal low-power radio, and in addition lower band radios for WirelessMBUS and long-range narrowband are available for optimal metering in difficult places withRadioCrafts. Sensinode NanoRouter™ products act as a gateway router between the core AMI backboneand local meters and other services, supporting both Ethernet and 2G/3G cellular. Wireless modulesrunning 6LoWPAN IPv6 are available for electric meters and sub-meters, as well as building automationdevices. Sensinode also makes protocol stack available for OEMs to integrate the technology in anydevice. Solutions are available to meet regulations worldwide.
Capabilities
With IP-based 802.15.4 networks with a range of up to 1.5 km LoS around each wireless NanoRouter, itis possible to cover whole buildings areas. In addition Wireless MBUS and high power 868 MHz radios provide better penetration and even better range for sub-metering. Thanks to high performance radio products, power amplification and ideal antennas reliable networks are formed. Thanks to IP technology, these networks are open and can be integrated into home and building automation (See White Paper 4).The product solutions for AMI include:
NanoRouter™ for LAN and GPRS/UMTS for backbone integration
Dual 6LoWPAN 2.4 Ghz and Wireless MBUS modules for electric meters
6LoWPAN Wireless MBUS modules for water, gas and heat sub-meters
NanoStack™ 6LoWPAN stack for 3rd party development
