Feminism
Feminism derived from Latin word "femina" or women and this movement started rolling in the 1890s along with the anxiety felt by women and men who were aware of the unequal relations between men and women in society. Feminism fight for two things that had been not possessed by women in general, that is their equality with men and the autonomy to decide what is good for her in many ways. Position of women in society is lower than of men, even they are considered as "The Second sex", citizens-class two. This shows that there is a kind of gender discrimination compared between men and women. This theory develops as a reaction from the fact who occurred in society, namely the existence of class conflict, conflict of race, and, especially, because of the existence of conflict of gender. The essence purpose of Feminism is improving the status and degree of women to equal or parallel to the position and the degree of men. Influential figure in the feminist discourse are; Simone de Beauvoir, Betty Friedan, Germaine Greer, Kate Millet and Michele Barret. Feminism began growing rapidly around 1960 in the United States have a wide impact as the modern movement. The following are the streams of Feminism: 1. Liberal Feminism, this movement appeared early 18th century along with the birth of the Enlightenment, was demanding freedom and equality of access to education, reform of discriminatory laws. 2. Traditional Marxist Feminism, This movement is based on Marxist theory, where adherents to combat the exploitative socio-economic system on women and the oppression of women is part of the class oppression in the production system. 3. Radical Feminism, This movement refers to the concept of biological essentialism (the essence of biological differences), an approach that anything associated with being male is negative and oppressive. 4. Socialist Feminism, This movement represents a synthesis of Marxist and radical feminist movement, this movement believes that women are exploited by two things: the patriarchal and capitalist systems.
