Ringstrainingisveryhard!Gymnastsuseapulleysystemcalledadreammachinethateffectivelycutstheeffortinhalf.Thedreammachineisveryfun,butyoucan’tadjustitsassistance.(Youcouldwearaweightvest!)Insteadofadreammachine,IwantedsomethingthatwouldletmereducetheassistanceovertimesoIcanweanmyselfoffthesystemasIgetstronger.IdesignedacounterweightsystemwhichIwanttosharewiththePosse.
 
Iknowit’shardtofigureoutwhat’sgoingonfromthepicturebutitwillmakemoresenseasIdescribehowitworks.Tousethesystemyougetintheharnessandattachthecordendstotheharness.You’renowlighterbyhowevermuchweightishungfromthepulley.Mycounterweightsystemusespulleys(4ofthem!)tocreateasystemthatletsmedialintheassistance.IfIuse30lbs,that’showmuchitreducestheeffortIneedtoprovide.AsIgetstrongerIneedlessandlessassistance.Thecounterweightisanalternativetobandsorhavingaspotter.IfIloaduphalfmybodyweight,itactsjustlikeadreammachine.Thesystemletsmelearnmovessafelyandreallygetafeelforthetimingandcontrolneededtoworkontherings.Itmakesringstrainingevenmoreofablast!It’sgreatfortrainingmuscle-uptransitions,forwardrolls,L-Sit,FrontandBackLevers.Andbasicconditioningworkaswell.Thesystemisindependentoftherings.Youcanusetheringswithoutthecounterweight,andyoucanusethecounterweightwithouttherings.Non-Ringsusesforthecounterweight:It’sgreatfortrainingpresshandstands,planchesontheP-Bars,orpikepushups.Mykidsevenuseitforbackflips!
SystemDescription
Mysystemconsistsof4pulleys,carabiners,afewswivelsandsome6mmcord.Iuseanarboristharness,notaclimbingharness,becauseIwantedsideloops.Climbingharnessestypicallyhaveafrontorrearloop.Iwanttheropescominginfromthesides.TheharnessIusehasgoodlegstraps,essentialtokeeptheharnessfromridingup.Theropesstaynearmyhips.Iuseswivelsinafewplacessotheropeswon’ttrytotwistthepulleys.

Thediagramisnottoscale,butitgivesagoodideaofthearrangement.Theceilinginmygymis18fthigh.Iusuallyhavetheringsabout8feetofftheground.Theringheightiseasilyadjustedwithasmallstepladder.Theringstrapsarehungfromaceilingcleatthatgivestherightspacing.Theeyeboltsforthepulleysaremounted5feettoeachsideoftheringcleat.Thecordisclippedintoandoutoftheharnessusinglockingcarabiners.
