Sternberg believed that the type and strength of one couple’s love could be determined bymeasuring the relative strength of the 3components of Love…1.
Intimacy
– feeling of closeness between twopeople…2.
Passion
– drive leading to romanticattraction, physical attraction andeventually sexual involvement…3.
Commitment
 – decision tostay with theperson and forgosimilarrelationshipswith others…
 
Balance?
 The ideal ‘balanced’ situation would exist when eachside of the ‘Love Triangle’ has been experienced withsufficient intensity. Though ‘perfect balance’ is difficult to achieve, soSternberg developed a ‘Typology of LoveRelationships’ in order to accommodate theseinteractions between the 3 components
