March 13, 2013To Whom It May Concern:Over the past 10 weeks I have had the privilege of acting as cooperating teacher toMs. Lindsey Summers. Her mature, thoughtful attitude, creative lesson ideas andstrong work ethic made her a joy to work with. Ms. Summers completed ten weeksof student teaching in both my kindergarten through sixth grade art room atCrestview Elementary and kindergarten through second grade art at Phenix EarlyChildhood Center in the West Des Moines School District during the spring of 2012.She met with over six hundred students at two schools over the course of a week.Ms. Summers assisted in planning, team taught, led small group and whole groupinstruction. Ms. Summers enthusiastically began student teaching two weeks priorto the required date and eagerly began participating in lessons and picking upclasses to teach on her own. She developed lessons that connected with thecommon core as well as the National Standards for Art Education and districtcurriculum. Ms. Summers created original lessons and reflections and clearly statedobjectives for students. She gave students personal feedback on their work. Theselessons were unique, innovative and fully engaged and motivated students.Ms. Summers executed each lesson and reflected on her own teachings, makingchanges as necessary. Students were able to enjoy a wide variety of materials andprocesses. She was responsible for differentiating curriculum to meet the needs of diverse population, including children learning to speak English, children withbehavior and learning goals as well as children who are academically gifted.Ms. Summers was able to create a positive rapport with both staff and students. From her first introduction to staff, she was seen as positive and professional.Students responded to her similarly. Ms. Summers had the unique opportunity toparticipate in professional development with the entire elementary art staff -aligning our curriculum to the National Standards for Arts Education, writingbenchmarks and objectives. She uses clear expectations and positive reinforcementto allow students to take risks with their learning and meet objectives. She was wellprepared for her lessons and her flexibility in meeting each days challenges wasexceptional for a beginning teacher.Ms. Summers is articulate, mature and has been an asset to both my classroom andour building. I highly recommend Ms. Summers as a candidate for an art teachingposition. I have no reservations in stating that she will be an exceptional teacher aswell as a valuable and positive contribution to the staff of any school.Sincerely,
Sarah Petersen
