Traffic Island Socks
by RedScot
These socks came into being after Ispent an afternoon with my noseburied in several volumes of stitchdictionaries. I’d been looking for asimple pattern that would morph wellinto being knit in the round, challenging enough to keep my fingersbusy, but my head angst-free;something to keep my brain fromexploding with too-long hours spent oncomplicated and concentration-draining(although very satisfying) travelling-cably, gazillion-Round-repeatly, tear-your-hair-out-in-bunches, tricksy sockpatterns that I was currently workingon... Knitting sorbet, if you will... Thechevron and feather pattern I foundhad lots of potential, and after an initialfew rounds, I realised that it had a lotin common with the famous ‘Jaywalker’ pattern so I knew it would be pretty to knit up and would be fast andbrain-‘splody free. After some tweaking, frogging and a little more tweaking, I arrived with some Traffic IslandSocks. Why
Traffic Island
? Well, with the wider ‘fixed’ bars running up and down the socks, with the added lace holes(and after the initial street reference), I was reminded of a computer game that came out yonks ago called ‘Frogger’. A game where you had to guide a frog over 2 sets of highways then 2 sets of waterways to get tofreedom, using the traffic islands in between as breathing places, avoiding cars, lorries, snakes, alligators andsubmerging turtles...It seemed apt...
Gauge
: 32 sts / 48 Rounds (st st) = 4 inches
Needles
: Set of 5 dpns size 2.5mm (US 1½)
Size
(approx): Ladies small (ankle 7”/8”), medium (ankle 9”/10”)and large (ankle 11”/12”).

Cuff and Leg
Cast-on 64 (64, 72), stitches onto 1 dpn then spread them evenly over 4 dpns – 16 stitches for each needle.Join in round, being careful not to twist the stitches and work k2 p2 rib for 1 to 1½
inches. After the last Round of the cuff, shift one stitch onwards to the next needle, so you have each needle beginningand ending with a knit stitch. This centres the pattern and means that each dpn doesn’t finish with a tricksy yo.NO Set-up Round for SMALLContinue with Traffic Islands Stitch pattern for 6 inches, or to the leg length you prefer,
