Stonehenge,ocatedontheSalisburyPlaininEngland,is oneofthebestknownmonu-mentsof theancientworld.Itis alargecircularsettingof largestandingstonesandcomprisesanarea 320feetndiameter.Aroundthestoness alowbankandaroundt abroken shallowditchormoat.InsidethebankaretwoshallowcircularditchescalledtheNorthBarrorvandtheSouthBarrow;however,heyarenotactuallybarrows,orprehistoricgrave mounds.Alsoaspartoftheplan areanumberofholeswhichhadbeendugupandlaterfilledupwithsoil anddebris.Therearewodifferentkindsofstones.Theverylargestonesarecalledsarsens.MedievalEnglishmencalledthem"sarsenstones"becauseheybelievedthattheSaracens,heirtermforforiignnonbelievers,hadcreatedhem.Thesarsensaremadeoutofsandstone,whichcanbefoundabouttwentymilesnorthofStonehenge.Thesmallerstonesaremadeor doleriteandrhylite,igneouso.k,calledbluestonesecauseoftheirbluishcolor.Thefascinatinghingis thattheserockshavebeenprovedtohavecomefromanareainWalesabout135milesfromStonehenge.The.ruundlandroutetheywouldhavetakenwouldhavemadetheourneyabout240miles.
