1B FOREWORD The Ruston Mark TB turbine has been designed and produced as a successor to the well established Mark TA of whichsome 500 are now giving reliable service throughout the world. This handbook is intended to give a broader view of the engine than is usual in’ such manuals where a certain basic knowledge is always assumed. To this end, the first part, Section 1 and 2 is purely'descriptive of the mech- anical construction of the engine and of the design and function of its support systems. Parts 3, 4 and § cover the operation and routine maintenance during normal use and Section 6 deals with the work involved in major inspections of the engine. The index to Sections indicate the scope of each section and the fly- sheets dividing the sections give the section contents in detail. The loose leaf type of binding allows books to be conveniently produced for individual installations, but there may be apparent omissions of material not applicable to the particular case. ‘The maximum benefit will be obtained from the book if it is placed in the hands of the man responsible for the operation and maintenance of the turbine, rather than held as a reference book in an office. A thorough understanding of the engine is essential if minor troubles are to be rectified before they become major problems. Our Service Department is always at the disposal of our users. Both ‘time and expense may be saved if advice is sought early rather than late. We shall be pleased to give all possible assistance on any difficulty, no matter how small. st SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS AND PRECAUTIONS Introduction ‘These Safety Instructions and Precautions are included for guidance in the interest of installation and personal safety. They in no way override company procedures and regulations when operating and maintaining gas turbine installations. GENERAL, “phe equipment is designed to provide safe and reliable operation, incorporating automatic shutdown features if serious malfunctions should occur. Close observation of the following precautions will aid in the prevention of troubles and will assure continuing performance to design standards. The order of listing is not intended to indicate the order of importance; each item is relatively important to overall safety and proper operation. 1. Operate, service, and maintain the gas turbine installation as prescribed in this manual, the "Literature for Ancillary Equipment" folder and any Service Bulletins which my be issued from time to time. 2. Understand set operation, function, and systems thoroughly. 3. Understand and observe the following safety instructions and precautions. 4. Know and understand all controls, indicators, normal indications, and operating limits. 5. Rely on your instruments, record and compare readings to detect developing abnormalities. 6, Before operating the gas turbine, learn the significance of possible malfunctions and be prepared to take appropriate action in the event of any emergency. St SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS 1 2, 9. 10. i. 12, 13. 14. Avoid personal contact with hot sections of the installation. Check pipelines regularly for vibration, fretting and security of clamps. Eliminate any oil or gas leaks as soon as they are detected. Before disconnecting any system lines (oil, fuel, pneumatic etc.) or dismantling components in situ for maintenance, ensure that system pressure has been reduced to zero. Ensure also that there are no naked flames in the vicinity Do not allow any bare wiring on or in the vicinity of the installation. Keep floorplates, covers, and panels in place, and explosion- Proof enclosures sealed. Do not step upon electrical conduit, junction boxes, fuel and oil piping, or use them as supports. Keep the installation and vicinity clean and unobstructed. In any installation controlled froma remotely located panel or a central station, always lock out the starting circuit by moving the master switch to OFF so that the engine will not start : unexpectedly while maintenance or inspection work is in progress. Blace an appropriate notice in a prominent position. Ensure rotating shaft protective guards are always in position. When removing casings or gearbox covers, never expose the escaping oil vapour to a naked flame otherwise an explosion may occur. Wear suitable protective equipment (masks, goggles, gloves etc.) when using recommended cleaning solvents or solutions. Avoid skin contact with solvents or solutions, or inhalation of their funes. Observe proper fire precautions whefi using cleaning solvents or solutions. Some high-voltage devices can store and maintain a residual voltage for several hours after the unit has stopped. A lethal electrical shock can result. Discharge all high-voltage circuits by using heavy insulated cables, and short each phase to ground before working on or around the equipment, Observe all safety precautions listed in the manual section covering batteries. De not enter any enclosure protected by a fire extinguishant system without first isolating that system. Page 2 of 3
