A
nimal welfare organisa-tions have their eyes fixedon a goal that often seemsout of reach. It’s always the little gestures of goodwill that come their way thatmake it possible for them to keepgoing. If you’d like to be a part of thesolution, here are a few easy stepsrecommended by people who’vebeen at it for a long time.
■
If you find an injured animal, the first step would be to assessthe seriousness of the injury. Mi-nor ones can be treated by pri-vate vets and you or a friendcould take care of the animal for afew days until recovery.
■
If the injury is serious, call anNGO (numbers listed below) andconsider making a one-time do-nation that will cover the cost of rescue and rehabilitation.
■
If you find an abandoned orhomeless animal, think of all theanimal-loving friends you know and try and find it a temporary orpermanent home, rather thanleaving the animal in an over-crowded shelter. It helps to makephone calls, send emails, put upposters in your club, beauty par-lour, office, church or any com-munity board to spread the wordaround. There are a million other waysto help depending on how muchtime and energy you choose tospend on it. If you feel likespreading the joy, get in touch with some of these people who will welcome your help with openarms.

The long and winding road
Little known facts aboutanimal welfareorganisations:
■
Crucial tasks likeadoption coordination, fundraising efforts andtemporary fostering arehandled by unpaidvolunteers who juggle theseroles and their full-time jobsor studies.
■
Most of these NGOs arerun by individuals who havespent their life savings onthe cause, foregoingretirement and vacations.
■
If all pet-owners sterilisedtheir cats and dogs, unplanned litters would beprevented and could reducethe enormous burden onwelfare organisations. Everyyear, thousands of newbornsare dropped off by ownerswho have not had their petsneutered.
■
For every hundred rescuecalls made by the public, only two or three maketoken donations to theorganisation.A large number of pedigreedogs are dumped in sheltersby owners when their petsget sick or old.
