nimal welfare organisa-tions have their eyes fixedon a goal that often seemsout of reach. It’s always the little gestures of goodwill that come their way thatmake it possible for them to keepgoing. If you’d like to be a part of thesolution, here are a few easy stepsrecommended by people who’vebeen at it for a long time.
If you find an injured animal, the first step would be to assessthe seriousness of the injury. Mi-nor ones can be treated by pri-vate vets and you or a friendcould take care of the animal for afew days until recovery.
If the injury is serious, call anNGO (numbers listed below) andconsider making a one-time do-nation that will cover the cost of rescue and rehabilitation.
If you find an abandoned orhomeless animal, think of all theanimal-loving friends you know and try and find it a temporary orpermanent home, rather thanleaving the animal in an over-crowded shelter. It helps to makephone calls, send emails, put upposters in your club, beauty par-lour, office, church or any com-munity board to spread the wordaround. There are a million other waysto help depending on how muchtime and energy you choose tospend on it. If you feel likespreading the joy, get in touch with some of these people who will welcome your help with openarms.
Working for the voiceless isoften an uphill battle

The long and winding road
Little known facts aboutanimal welfareorganisations:
Crucial tasks likeadoption coordination, fundraising efforts andtemporary fostering arehandled by unpaidvolunteers who juggle theseroles and their full-time jobsor studies.
Most of these NGOs arerun by individuals who havespent their life savings onthe cause, foregoingretirement and vacations.
If all pet-owners sterilisedtheir cats and dogs, unplanned litters would beprevented and could reducethe enormous burden onwelfare organisations. Everyyear, thousands of newbornsare dropped off by ownerswho have not had their petsneutered.
For every hundred rescuecalls made by the public, only two or three maketoken donations to theorganisation.A large number of pedigreedogs are dumped in sheltersby owners when their petsget sick or old.

Moral cops, representingdifferent organisations, havethreatened tovandaliseValentine’s Day celebrations in thecountry.Touchwood, so far,Chennai is not inthe hit list. But,many netizens haveformed different groups to take onthe moral brigades. Are you game to join along?
Love in the times of
In the pink oftheir protest
At the face of it, the ‘Pink Chaddi Campaign’ mightsound ridiculous. But the organisers claim they havebeen getting a tremendous response. So much so thatall those supporting the campaign have been asked tosend their ‘gifts’ directly to Pramod Muthalik’s office inHubli, instead of dropping at the collection points inevery city. Now, for the uninitiated, the campaign was startedon February 5 by some netizens to oppose the Sri RamSena, who were responsible for the Mangalore pub at-tack. It wants you to get imaginative, have some funand fight back. How? Buy, collect or fish out a pinkunderwear (why the colour discrimination, it could beany colour of your choice) to the Sena’s. Many collectionpoints were introduced over the weeks to help donorshand over their packets. In Chennai, we hear that no-body has come forward to be the representative for theregion. However, an organiser claimed that a couple ofparcels have come from the city.

Call it the ‘Munna Bhai’ influence, the love birds inBangalore are planning to go out in groups and offerfree hugs to the people as a way of expressing love. It iscalled the Free Hug campaign. Equipped with placardssome of the wordings like ‘Happy Valentines Day’, ‘Ilove you’, ‘Hug me’ and ‘Public Display of violence is notpart of Indian culture’ will dot these protest. These dare devils have a special appeal to all girls, women, moms, grand moms, sisters, daughters, girlf-riends and wives to join them. Roshan raho
Twenty-eight-year-old Roshini’s ‘Send Pramod Mutha-lik a Valentine’s Day card’ is the easiest way you couldshow your protest against all the moral hooligans. It’sreally simple, if you were anyway planning to buy a cardfor your sweetheart, just buy an additional one and sendit to Muthalik. Roshini has already gathered the supportof 900 members from across India, a good response con-sidering that she came up with the plan last Friday.“Many are even personalising the
cards,” she adds.
Bar-bar-dheko
You needn’t be a boozer to go to pubs. Why not have a juice there and raise a toast to the Indian women, saythese campaigners on the social networking site Face-book. The ‘Pub Bharo’ campaign invites all men andwomen to fill the pubs which ever city they are in onValentine’s Day. Reportedly, the Pub Bharo campaign isbeing endorsed by Tejaswini Chowdhury, and her moth-er Renuka Chowdhury, Union Minister for Women andChild Development. With more than 1,000 members en-dorsing the campaign, they have not yet received agreen signal from the cops so far.Log on to http://blogaloreans.in/2009/02/hug-karo-and-pub-bharo-andolan-in-bangalore-to-dare-the-ram-sene
