Paul was accused, by the Jews who opposed him, of turning the world upside downin Acts 17:6. If you have wondered what message he preached that brought him suchsuccess and persecution as spoken of in II Cor 11:24 Of the Jews five times received Iforty stripes save one. Since he had been unable to go to Rome he wrote his messagedown in this epistle to them. Philosophers have refused to hear his message but havedistorted chapters 9 and 11 to suit their purposes.Just as John began his gospel with the declaration that Jesus
lights every man thatcometh into the world
, (Jn 1:9) so Paul declares in Rom 1:16 “… I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to
every one
that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of Godrevealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”Ro 1:18 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness andunrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that whichmay be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.” Thetruth of God is revealed from heaven to every unrighteous act of men. The work of theHoly Spirit is totally faithful in convincing every man in the world of sin andunrighteousness. Every man is without excuse. Paul understood that the definition of unrightousness was the determined opposition of the person in his heart or inner managainst the manifestation of the revelation of his guilt that he was receiving from God.He declares in chapter 2 Ro 2:14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law,do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law untothemselves:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing oneanother;)

Paul’s definition of faith
We notice the definition of faith as used by Paul is that a person responds to thevoice of God in his conscience being guided by God’s Spirit. This is what Romans 1:17tells us, “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it iswritten, The just shall live by faith. For the wrath of God is revealed from heavenagainst all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth inunrighteousness…”A man tells a lie and instantly a sinking feeling comes in his conscience. “All liarsshall have their part in the lake of fire,” comes from the living God speaking to hisheart. It is the faithful work of God as spoken by Jesus in Jn 16:8 “…when he is come,he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment…” How manyare reproved of sin by the Holy Spirit? Every man in the whole world, the most distantundiscovered tribe is not only known to God but is being drawn to righteousness asspoken by Jer. 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked:who can know it? I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every manaccording to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” God gives to you andto me, to
every man
in the world according to his ways.This responding to the call of God to righteousness is the basis of all true faith. Sothe righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith. It is the living Godadministering guidance to the spirit of every man and as man humbles himself tounconditionally be guided by His Spirit in every circumstance his righteousness is fromfaith to faith. It is a living, on going process that is unfolded step by step in everycircumstance of life, this is known as walking in the spirit in Romans chapter 8. Paullaid it out to the unrighteous council of Jerusalem with the declaration in Acts 23:1“And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren
 , I have lived in all  good conscience before God until this day
. And the high priest Ananias commandedthem that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.” Again in Chapter 24 “… And havehope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. And herein do
 I exercise myself, to have always aconscience void of offence toward God, and toward men
.” Notice the dynamicimperative message of the cross, the true righteousness so touches those who areunrighteous that the spirit of unrighteousness in them becomes instantly, angrily on thedefensive, just as did the high priest who was so riled that he commanded them to smitehim on the mouth. It was the same spirit reacting according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience that works in youif you are living in unrighteousness. You want the “nice guy image” but when someonerepeats what the Holy Spirit is constantly whispering to you in your heart telling you

that you are resisting God and out of fellowship, in a word are unrighteous, your temper flares. Especially so, if you are of the clergy who has spent so much effort in buildingyour image. The wrath of God that is being made real in your spirit of your unrighteousness and separation from wholehearted fellowship from God reacts by thisSatanic spirit of the prince of the power of the air that was manifested in the commandto smite him on the mouth, and give him 39 stripes for getting so deep in my heartwhere God is condemning and calling me to righteousness.Ro 1:18 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness andunrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that whichmay be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.”Paul explains it this way in Rom. 10:3 “For they being ignorant of God'srighteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submittedthemselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. …The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth,and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confesswith thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised himfrom the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth untorighteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 17 So then
faithcometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God
.” Faith is responding to Godwho is speaking to you in your innermost being, in your heart.
God is
 
faithfully speaking to you and to me about every sin every day
If you are not fully surrendered to the will and the guidance of the Holy Spirit inyour heart you cannot understand the gospel. The failure to heed His voice turns your heart into a blindness or spiritual stupidity that brings about all the evils you become part of, as you continue hardening your heart. Jesus declared to Nicodemus in Jn. 3:3“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdomof God.”The recognized clergy of our day have all gone through a scholasticism that deniesPaul’s definition of faith and they cannot see the Kingdom of God. On the wholeorganized religion teaches that faith is believing in a theological system. They teachthat to believe is to believe the historic words and texts in the Bible, going then on withtheir theories about God’s laws. When the Bible says Heb 4:12 “For the word of God isquick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to thedividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest inhis sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we haveto do.” They leave off the latter verse and declare that it is the Word of the Bible andignore the personally connotation of Jesus speaking to every heart as spoken of in thesescriptures. Since they are in disobedience to the word of Jesus speaking to their heartsand are living in unrighteousness, they cannot see the kingdom of God within us.
