Radiological Imaging of the Digestive Tract in Infants and Children

Edited by Annick S. Devos and Johan G. Blickman Secaucus, NJ: Springer-Verlag, 2008. ISBN 978-3-540-40733-1. Hardcover, $169.00; pp 252; 500 gures.

his is a comprehensive textbook on updated imaging of the digestive tract in infants and children. It provides a practical and logical approach to daily clinical diagnostic issues in the eld of pediatric gastroenterology. It is intended for radiologists in training or those seeking continuing medical education, as well as for pediatricians. The authors are well known European and American practitioners and teachers of pediatric radiology. The editors have succeeded in building a book that will help general radiologists overcome their unease at performing and interpreting pediatric gastrointestinal imaging procedures. The book contains seven chapters. The rst could stand on its own as a monograph on Imaging in Pediatric Gastrointestinal Emergencies and should appeal to trainees in radiology. The following chapters are organized by organ (ie, esophagus, stomach, accessory organs of digestion, small bowel, colon). The nal chapter provides an update on sedation and interventional procedures related to the gastrointestinal tract.

The book is sophisticated in its organization. Gastrointestinal emergencies in neonates are dealt with separately from acute problems in older children. The chapters on the different organs are presented in a logical approach, describing rst the imaging techniques and embryology and then reviewing the main clinical conditions. Four tables in the rst chapter enhance the didactic quality of the discussion. The book is easy to read with the help of excellent illustrations (43 are in color). The references in each chapter include highly useful and relevant articles. This work fullls its purpose of presenting an up-to-date and multimodality approach to gastrointestinal imaging in children and infants. It is a concise reference work for all practitioners in this eld. Reviewed by Kamaldine Oudjhane, MD, MSc
