Size matters, at least when choosing patterns for big bass.

looks at a few successful imitations from the USA.

ere in Ireland, during Septemberand October, we have a migratoryrun o ‘sprats’, juvenile herringand mackerel. The autumn shoreline shinessilver with millions o tiny scales shed bythese small sh in their bid to escape thechasing mature mackerel shoals. This is otena highly visible occurrence, but beore or aterthis happens other small or medium-sized share present in our local waters, but we oten just don’t see that much activity. Sandeels, pollack, wrasse, gobies and blennies, mulletin shoals yes, sea trout and founders, presentalso, but not in classic baitsh numbers.Bass that I have killed and eaten, uponexamining their stomach contents, oten seempre-occupied with crabs or other ood sourcesthat are present. The act remains that theyalso took the fy that I caught them on. Sowhen they see our fy presentations, no matteri they are Deceivers, Clousers or anotherpattern, some are imitative yes, but others– probably most – are not. But bass like them, some more than others.Bass are capable o travelling at reasonablespeeds or quite long periods o time as theirmuscle denition and body shape reveals. Whenhunting, they have a tendency to shoal togetherand they will grub easily with their noses downin the mud searching or crabs, worms andshrimps. Given the opportunity the bass shoalwill eat and predate upon many things and theywill just as easily turn and hit a passing sandeelas crunch and eed on a crab! This is the shoal – ghting, eeding andswimming together on a daily basis.
