Located in the heart o the Midwest, SOUTH BEND was not always the bustling center o manuacturing, retailing, arming, proessional and service businesses that it is today. A Miami Indian Village was herewhen Rene Robert Cavelier de la Salle rst set oot on Indiana soil in 1679. Pierre Navarre married aPotawatomi squaw when he came to what is now SOUTH BEND as an agent o the American Fur Companyin 1802. The log cabin Navarre built or his bride (the rst home in our city) is preserved in its original condition in Leeper Park’s Garden o Fragrance. Alexis Coquillard arrived on the scene in 1823 to establisha trading post on the banks o the St. Joseph River. He called his post Big St. Joseph Station. The namewas changed to St. Joseph’s in 1827. Two years later, it became South Hold, and in 1830 the name SOUTHBEND became ocial. The town was platted in 1831 when its population was 168. Industry took its placebeside trade when Coquillard built a four mill and a saw mill in 1838 where the Kankakee River enters theSt. Joe River. It was in 1852, however, that the Industrial era o SOUTH BEND really began with the arrival rom Ohio o Henry and Clement Studebaker, who ounded the rm which attained international ame.MISHAWAKA’S past began more than 150 years ago in the settling o virgin orests not long ater theromantic legend o Princess Mishawaka. MISHAWAKA was made up o several communities, the rst o which was St. Joseph’s Iron Works, ormed on the south side o the river to mine bog iron. Since beingincorporated as a city in 1839, with a population o 862, MISHAWAKA has developed into a successul and progressive city - the largest retail hub in the area.St. Joseph County is home to approximately 250,000 people whose addresses might be South Bend,Mishawaka, Granger, Notre Dame, Osceola, Lakeville, North Liberty, Walkerton or New Carlisle, Indiana.Together with neighboring Elkhart and LaPorte Counties in Indiana and Berrien and Cass Counties inMichigan, this area is oten called Michiana.People living and working here enjoy all the benets o being ninety minutes rom the hustle and bustleo Chicago, thirty minutes rom the beaches o Lake Michigan, and in the midst o a thriving communityull o diverse business, educational, cultural and recreational opportunities. We have prepared this inormational booklet to help acquaint you with the quality o lie here and thediversity o opportunities awaiting you. We know that moving to a new area requires a certain amount o adjustment and we hope we can help by providing some basic inormation about our community.WELCOME!!
