Status of Education
(Based on ASER 2012)
School Enrollment Children in the age group 11-14 5% 5% 1% Govt. Pvt. Other Not in School 89% Reading Levels (English) 89% children in the age group 11-14 years are enrolled in government schools.

Only 25.3% children in Class 6 and 36.7% children in Class 7 can read easy sentences.

Arithmetic Levels

25.8% of Class VI students can do subtraction but not division. Less than 60% of Class VII students can do division problems.

Pratham Bihar
Pratham Bihar has a strong track record of collaboration and partnership with the state government. In 2006, Sankalp was launched as Bihar's flagship program in 17 districts. The program was aimed at improving quality of primary school education. Pratham also ran a Collab Centre in Sitamarhi district, in partnership with the district Administration and Childline India Foundation, a helpline for children in need of care and protection.

Read India
Volunteers have been trained in English and Arithmetic in activity based teaching. Volunteers conduct daily classes and Pratham staff conducting short duration learning camps for primary school children.

Cluster Learning Centres (CLCs)


The project covers interventions for children at pre-school, primary (1 to 5) and middle school level. 15 Cluster Learning Centres have been set up for supporting children of 300 villages divided into 15 clusters At each CLC, a team of 6 people is recruited to conduct centre-based and out-of-centre activities for the surrounding cluster of 20 villages.

Education for Education (EFE)


To impart basic skills in the area of Digital Literacy and basic English knowledge to Read India volunteers. These centres offer Computer, English and Soft Skills courses to Pratham volunteers.

Gyanshala Programme It is a residential program for boys who were once child labourers, and who have been rescued from it in order to reintegrate them into mainstream society. They are engaged in sports, academics, creative enrichment activities, and vocational skilling. Pratham Council for Vulnerable Children
PCVC aims at protection of child rights and focuses on rescuing child labourers of age group 6 to 18 years children. It conducts awareness campaigns about child rights, RTE and other laws. Currently there are 3 centres in Bihar that help rescue child labour, enrol them back to school and also engage them in learning activities.

Urban Programme
Children of age group 3 to 6 are provided volunteer- led classes. Volunteers conduct one-hour preschool activities with children at 90 Aanganwadi centres.

Padho Jahanabad' and 'Padho Poobi Champaran


A key element of the programs was that a special reading period was instituted during school hours. During this period, children are grouped by learning level rather than by standard/grade, in order to conduct activities according to the goals envisaged.

Sanjay Singh- State Head
After completing his Masters degree from the Department of Labour and Social Welfare of Patna University in 1999, Sanjay Singh joined Pratham. While with Pratham, he had the opportunity to study Education Technology at the University of Twente in Holland. Sanjay has been part of the core team that has taken Pratham from being a small urban program to a large scale statewide partnership with the government in elementary education. He has headed Pratham's work in Bihar since 2005. He has extensive field experience both in program implementation as well as content development, curriculum design and training.
