RMIT Vietnam has received its sixthconsecutive annual Golden Dragon Awardfor excellence in education services. TheVietnam Economic Times conducts thisaward in collaboration with the Ministry ofInvestment and Planning.RMIT Vietnam has also been awarded itssecond consecutive Top Trade ServicesAward. The Ministry of Industry and Tradeand Newspaper of Industry and Tradeorganise this award to acknowledgeexcellence of enterprises operating inVietnam in the trade and services sector.“All at RMIT feel deeply honoured to beconsistently recognised by both theGovernment and enterprises for the qualityof our services to education in Vietnam,”
 
RMIT Vietnam winsprestigious BusinessAward
RMIT Vietnam has received a prestigiousAustralian Business Award from theAustralian Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam(AusCham) for its overall excellence inperformance.RMIT Vietnam has won various AusChamawards in the past five years, and this is thethird time RMIT Vietnam has been awardedthe Best Overall Business Excellence Award.“Many people at RMIT in Vietnam and inMelbourne have worked hard to ensure aquality Australian education is delivered inVietnam by RMIT,” RMIT Vietnam PresidentMichael Mann said, shortly before hisdeparture from RMIT to a new role in theprivate sector.“The quality of our graduates speaks foritself. Our graduates are working hard toimprove the Vietnamese economy, which atthe same time promotes stronger links,especially in business between Vietnam andAustralia.”

RMIT Vietnam’s Academic Vice President,Professor Andrew Scown, said after thepresentations.“To receive such an award is a wonderfulreflection on the dedication of our academic staffas well as the commitment of our students.”The Golden Dragon Award was presented in aceremony at the Hanoi Opera House on 10January 2009, and the Top Trade Services Awarda week later at the same venue.An RMIT Vietnam alumna was also a winner ofAusCham’s Young Starters Business Grant 2008.Ms Nguyen Thuy Tinh Ca and her twoteammates won the $US5,000 seed funding firstprize for “Lovella One Stop Hair Shop” project, aservice offering the most trendy haircut services,hair care products and hair accessoriesexclusively for children.The Australian Business Awards were presentedon 8 November 2008 at the Park Hyatt HotelSaigon.

Professor James Barber, who is serving asRMIT Vietnam president until the middle of2009, is himself an RMIT graduate. He hashad extensive experience in academicmanagement and leadership and policy inuniversities in Australia and Canada. Duringhis career, Professor Barber has worked atFlinders University, University of Toronto andcurrently at RMIT University Melbourne.Professor Barber has a Bachelor of Arts(First Class Honors) and a Bachelor ofScience, a Master of Social Work and aDoctorate in Experimental Psychology. RMIT University in Australia has beenmoving over the past year to develop a newand more consistent visual identity – acommon ‘look’ and ‘feel’ that will be appliedto all publications, advertising, signs andbanners, and online communications. Theintent is to produce a unique style thatencapsulates “the RMIT Brand”.The new look is being applied to thisnewsletter, as well as to the new 2009Student Diaries, Program Guides, and a newRMIT Vietnam website. RMIT Vietnam hasjust launched Phase 1 of its new website.The new site has the same look and similarRMIT Vietnam’s MBA students met withGeorgetown University’s MBA students intwo evening exchange sessions on Tuesday3 March and Wednesday 4 March.Vietnam was chosen for the 8th consecutiveyear by the McDonough School of Businessat Georgetown University, United States ofAmerica, to be the destination for its MBAstudents’ international field projects.During the joint session, MBA students fromboth universities made team presentationscontent structure as the one in Melbourne.There are also improved links between thetwo sites to convey the ‘dual hub’ relation-ship between the two campuses.The new design approach is consistentacross all countries and locations in whichRMIT operates, but with some adaptationto suit particular local needs.The “new look” RMIT Vietnam website isat:www.rmit.edu.vn

While at Flinders Universityin 2000 he was awarded theVice-Chancellor’s Award for Exellence inTeaching.Along with his post at RMIT Vietnam,Professor Barber is the standing deputy tothe Vice Chancellor of RMIT Melbourne,serves on the Board of Open UniversitiesAustralia and represents UniversitiesAustralia on two national bodies.Professor James Barber is interim Presidentof RMIT Vietnam until June 2009.
