Internet and Its Uses A research was conducted among 20 students at the Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Ilmu Khas (IPGIK). The aim of this study was to find out the uses of the Internet among students. In addition, the survey was carried out by distributing a questionnaire with 10 items to the students. Based on the research, the data was collected and analysed by using four bar graphs. Firstly, graph 1 shows the purposes of students surf the Internet. They go online on the Internet to do research. There are three reasons why students use the Internet for research which are for assignment, extra notes and others. The highest number of students browses the Internet for assignment which is 5 students. Moreover, 5 students also do research for other purpose, while there is only 3 students use the Internet for extra notes which is slightly less prevalent than assignment and other purposes. Secondly, graph 2 indicates the reasons why students go online for entertainment. Music, Internet TV, gaming and shopping are the main purposes. Based on the graph, the highest number of students search the Internet mostly for music which is 15 students, but there is only 2 students used it for gaming and shopping. Besides that, Internet TV is the least popular entertainment chosen by only 1 student. Next, graph 3 represents the students objective surfing the Internet which is to get the information. According to the graph, the motives of the students going online on the Internet for information are due to reading the news, finding journal, searching meaning of words in encyclopedia, and also blogging. Blogging is the main reason and has the highest number of students online for this purpose which is 8 students compared to journal which is about 5 students. On the other hand, about 4 students browse the Internet to read news and there are only 3 students who use the Internet for searching meaning of words in encyclopedia.
Then, graph 4 shows the students purposes browsing the Internet for communication. Social networking, chat rooms, and instant messenger are the common reasons of students online for communication. Social networking is the most popular method chosen by 19 students to communicate. Contrary to social networking, there is only 1 student used chat rooms for communication, whereas there is no single student who used instant messenger as a way of communication. In conclusion, most of students surf the Internet to do research for their assignments. Next, music becomes the most popular entertainment among students in IPGIK. Then, blogging also has the highest number of students browse to get information online. Last but not least, most of students in IPGIK like to communicate through social networking such as Facebook and Twitter.
