Objective: To help students develop a clear and well-developed thesis statement that is sustained throughout the paper. 15 minutes: Peer Review PowerPoint: If this is the first time that you will be conducting a peer review in your class, it would be helpful to review the PowerPoint on peer review with your class.
30-45 minutes: Thesis Statement Peer Review Worksheet (see attached): Divide students into groups of four and have them complete the Thesis Statement Peer Review Worksheet attached. Remind students to consider peer comments during the revision process.
Thesis Statement Workshop/Peer Review Have each group member read his/her thesis aloud and answer each question about the thesis statement. Do not discuss the thesis until everyone has had an opportunity to record his or her thoughts. 1. What question is the thesis trying to answer (or prove)? 2. What topics do you think this student is going to research? 3. Is the thesis statement clear? Is the thesis statement simply observational? Why? 4. How could you narrow down or strengthen this thesis statement?
