April 2009

“The Iron Hills
Conference has
an unbelievable
amount of talent,''
Herrigel said. “We lost
some very talented sen-
iors from last year who
performed extremely
well against the
top girls in the
county. I feel that
there's a lot of return-
ing talent and new tal-
ent to build a stronger
team this year.
I'm excited to see
which girls step up
this season.''

By Josh Lashley
If you continue to live in the past and are constant-
ly thinking about past difficulties, then it'll usual-

ly be extremely tough to make progress in any walk of life. The West Morris Central High School girl's track and field program had a record of two wins and seven losses during the 2008 season. But, that was last year, and now that we're into the 2009 season, there are plenty of reasons to think that this program can get a lot of positive things accomplished this spring.

The first thing's that really sticks out in regards to the WMC girl's track and field team are the number of student-athletes on the roster.

“We have six captains on the team this year because we have nearly 70 girls out for the team,'' Head coach Jay Herrigel said. “Tori Chanda, Ashley Guerra, Lindsey Guerra, Jenna IntersimoneKelly Ann Karcich and Ali Popp are our captains. I am looking for these girls to encourage and share experience with their teammates. I want them to be approachable, focused on the team goals and help me develop the young talent on the team.''

Members for the senior class for Central include Madiyna Bass, Emily Bodman, Jordan Book, Chanda, Amanda Edmunds, Giovanna Feula, Ashley Guerra, Lindsey Guerra, Intersimone, Linda Kanen, Karcich, Popp, Dona Rehm and Erica Sampson.

Juniors listed on the roster include Stephanie Beggin, Sara Berstler, Vittoria Carbini, Julia Cho, Hannah Clzianoski, Alexandra Gebbia, Francine Gebbia, Colleen Georges, Erin Guida, Heather Schaffer, Annette Siedlecki, Kaitlyn Skehan and Sarah Whalen.

“I would like to improve our dual meet record,'' Herrigel said. “I'd like to see each girl improve their personal record. I want us to finish higher in the con-

The one word that
seems
to
shine

through while dis- cussing the West Morris Central High School soft- ball squad this spring is competitive. In 2008, WMC finished just a few games below the .500 mark at 8-11 and this season there is every reason to believe that they can show constant improvement and very pos- sibly finish above the .500

The Chester Lioness Club on behalf of the Chester Food Pantry will be collecting canned and non perishable food items as well as frozen turkeys and hams for needy families in the area. The local Shop Rite Supermarkets are presently offering dis- counted or free turkeys or hams to patrons

who exceed certain spending limitations. Anyone who would like to donate their free turkey or ham, and/or canned and non per- ishable food items for distribution to those in need may call Holly Simmenroth, at 908- 879-5932.

Head coach Courtney Bertos has a strong core of returning players who have the experience and talent needed to help guide the team to many wins during the regular season.

Key returnees for West Morris include Danielle Cirelli (senior, second base), Erica DeAngelis (sr., first base and pitcher), Morgan Huizenga (sr., out- field), Sam Kitts (sr., pitch- er), Chelsea Bingham (jun- ior, catcher), Adrianna Orlando (jr., third base) and Erica Pakutka (jr., short stop).

“We will look to the sen- iors and returning varsity players to lead this year's team,'' Bertos said. “I am certain that they'll lead by example through hard work and focus in practice and in games. I will also look to them to lead of the field with get-togethers and team bonding.''

Newcomers who may
contribute in a big way for

WMC this year include Katie Carberry (first base), Maggie English (third base and outfield), Jenny Kratch (outfield and catcher), Aubrey Pellerin (outfield) and Jenny Skinner (pitcher).

“I would like to see us get a little better each day that we step onto the field,'' Bertos said. “I would like to see us be competitive in the county and the conference, while striving to make the state tournament. We are looking forward to a good season. The girl's are work- ing hard and setting goals that they'd like to achieve.''

Bertos is well aware that there are many quality teams in the area and she understands that her players need to be determined in order to reach their goals.

“In our conference and our county, Morris Knolls and Mount Olive are always tough to beat,'' Bertos said. “But, most teams in our area have put together quality programs and we look to be right in the mix.''
