About the AuthorDr. Edgar E Codd joined IBM in 1949 asa programming mathematician for the SelectiveSequence Electronic Calculator During the 1950she participated in developing several important IBMproducts. Beginning in 1968, Dr. Codd turned hisattention to the management of large commercialdatabases and developed the relational model asa foundation. Since the mid-1970s, Dr. Codd hasbeen working persistently to encourage vendors todevelop relational DBMSs and to educate users,DBMS vendors, and standards committees regardingthe services such a DBMS should supply and whyusers need all these services.In 1985, Dr. Codd established two lecturing andconsulting companies in San Jose. These companiesspecialize in all aspects of relational database manage-ment, relational database design, and evaluation ofproducts that are claimed to be relational.
