CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE
Traveller Characteristics of Recent Net Overseas Migration
looks at some demographiccharacteristics of travellers that contributed to net overseas migration (NOM) in 2006–07.The article explores characteristics such as age, sex, country of birth and distribution by state and territory.
 Permanent Departures—Where are they going?
looks at permanent departures from Australia of both people born in Australia and former migrants over the nine yearsending 2006–07. Where those departing intend to settle and whether or notoverseas-born departures intend to return to their country of birth is also discussed.
FEATURE ARTICLES
Estimated resident population (ERP) by country of birth for 30 June 2007 is preliminary.Estimates for 2002 to 2006 are revised and based on the 2006 Census of Population andHousing. Estimates for periods earlier than this are final. See paragraph 3 of theExplanatory Notes for additional information.
OVERSEAS-BORNPOPULATION
Interstate migration estimates in this publication are final for years up to and including2005–06 and preliminary for 2006–07.
INTERSTATE MIGRATION
In 2007 the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) introduced improved methods for calculating net overseas migration (NOM) (refer to Chapter 3 and paragraphs 11–17 of the Explanatory Notes). A time series based on this improved methodology fromDecember quarter 2003 onwards is available in Tables 3.10–3.12.Due to the improved methodology a break in time series exists. Net overseas migrationestimates using this methodology have been used in compiling Australia's officialpopulation estimates for September quarter 2006 and onwards. Due to changes in themethods used to adjust NOM estimates, caution should be taken when comparingestimates over time. For more information see
Information Paper: Improved Methods for Estimating Net Overseas Migration, 2006
(cat. no. 3107.0.55.003) and
Information Paper: Statistical  Implications of Improved Methods for Estimating Net Overseas Migration, Australia,007
