Soal: 3 Wacana V When we buy canned or bottled food products at the grocers or the supermarket, we will find out that there are some additives added to the main nutrients. An additives is a non-nutritive substance intentionally added to food generally in small quantities, to improve appearance, flavor, storage properties, etc. Most governments issue lists of permitted additives stating the highest acceptable concentration, defining food products in which they may be used and sometimes recommending the maximum daily consumption. Such legislation is revised periodically, and product may be added to or deleted from permitted lists because of additional scientific knowledge and experience of their use. A group of food additives includes vitamins, amino acids, and minerals which are added to foodstuffs to compensate for losses occurring during processing or to provide additional sources in diet that might otherwise be deficient in such nutrients. Examples of their use include enrichment o margarine with the addition of vitamin A, and niacin amide to flour or bread. Salt often has a small amount of iodine to it to avoid a diet deficiency that can cause goiter development.

Appearance is an important factor in food appeal, and legislation in most countries permits the addition of both natural and synthetic colouring mater based on the colouring standards issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO). Flavoring materials are added to basic foodstuff to provide a characteristic product flavor or to supplement or modify the original flavor. Most flavoring materials are still of natural origin, but progress in organic chemistry has made, it possible to analyze flavoring materials and to synthesize product similar with those found in nature. Flavor can also be influenced by the addition of the flavor enhancer such as monosodium glutamate which intensifies perception of flavoring. Canned or bottled food product contain additives besides .... Non-nutritive substances A. Margarine with vitamins B. Storage properties C. Small quantities D. E . Main nutrients

Soal: 6 In any community its various arganism are linked in a complicated web relationships. There are many usually in balance with one another. If the natural web is disturbed, the results may be disastrous. As the rule, the various populations of organisms tend to adjust to seasonal and other changes, and the whole community stays in balance. Most disturbances come from man's activities. In an undisturbed forest, white-tailed deer feed on plants of varoius kinds. Wolves and mountain lions prey on the deer. When deer are numerous, their enemies become numerous too, because there is so much to feed upon. The deer and their enemies stay in balance with one another. The man enters the scene. He looks on animals such as wolves and mountain lions as harmful. He killsas many as possible. When the animals that feed on deer are killed, the deer multiply, without check. Soon the large deer population has eaten nearly all the plants available for food. Then the deer begin to starve. Another example of man's interference with natural communities is the use of

chemical insecticides. Grass in the sprayed ares may be eaten by cows. As a recult, teh milk of some cows has been found to contain too much DDT. the insecticides are also collcted in the tissues of birds that eat the sprayed insects. Some of the affected birds lay eggs that do not hatch. The number of birds therefore decreases, cutting down the food supply of other animals. Whether intended or not, almost evry change that man has made in natural webs of life has turned out to be a disaster for communities involved. Everything he does affects all therest of it, just as any change in the community or climate around him affects his won well-being. Thus, by changing natural communities, man may harm himself. . Soal: 20 Oil like coal and natural gas, is a fossil fuel. Fossil fuels made from the remains of dead plants and animals. It is thought that oil comes from tiny plants and animals whose bodies fell in their millions to the seabed when they died. There they were covered by sand and mud, which later hardened into rocks. In the course of millions of years, the plants and animal material underwent chemical changes and eventually turned into oil. Oil deposit lie hidden deep beneath th surface of the earth. Soal: 27 NOISE Noise can be defined as sound that we do not want. This definition is a subjective one, however, because what is unwanted sound to other. Noise is subjective. That noise is subjective may mean that people receive it at different levels. This two people will not agree that the loud music from a neighbours house, for example, is noise. To one of them , however, it is tolerable, noisewhile to the others it is anoying noise. This different in the levels of reception between two people may be due to the fact the former is a patien person, whille the letter is not. To borrow a term from psychology, the person who can tolerate the loud music is said to have been conditioned, whill the person who is annoyed by it is said not to have been conditioned by the noise. In additio to the tolerance and annoyance levels, three is yet another level of noise reception. This is what might be called the demage level, where the noise is such that it demage the eardrum. The demage may be temporary, and in this case the person concerned may be only temporarily deafened. It may be also be that the damage is permanent. When this occurs the person become permanentely deaf. Very often however, deafness does not occur right way but comes gradually as result of along periode of exposure to the source of loud noise. The person concerned may tolerate that noise because he was been conditioned by it, but demage is done. The damaging noise will accelerate his gradual loss of hearing due to growing age. Soal: 29 Richard and Philip invited Mrs. Moffat to their barbecue. Richard and Philips barbecue was, of course, a great success. About twenty people came and Richard and Philip cooked lots of hamburgers and chicken and made a big salad and brought big pieces of watermelon and everyone laughed and joked and told Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton how wonderful their sons were. I ate one hamburger and didnt talk to anybody. After a

while, I left, and made sure that nobody saw me leave. Mrs. Moffat ate three plates of chicken and two hamburgers. After that she said she was very tired and was going to go and have a sleep. She walked over to her umbrella and sat down on her deckchair and went to sleep. When she woke up later, everybody on the beach was surprised to hear her screaming and shouting. My bag!!!! My bag!!! she shouted. Its gone!!! Its GONE!!! Everybody on the beach ran over to Mrs. Moffat to see what the problem was. Someone has taken my bag!!! she screamed, Someone has stolen my bag!!! Impossible! said everybody else. This is a very safe, friendly beach! There are no thieves here! But it was true. Mrs. Moffats big bag wasnt there anymore. Nobody had seen any strangers on the beach during the barbecue, so they thought that Mrs. Moffat had perhaps taken her bag somewhere and forgotten it. Mr. Morelli from the caf organized a search of the beach. Everybody looked everywhere for Mrs. Moffats big bag. Eventually, they found it. My father saw it hidden in the sand under a deckchair. A green deckchair. Richard and Philips deckchair. My father took it and gave it back to Mrs Moffat. Everybody looked at Richard and Philip. Richard and Philip, the golden boys, stood there looking surprised. Of course, they didnt know what to say. Mrs. Moffat looked in her bag. She started screaming again. Her purse with her money in it wasnt in the big bag. My purse! she shouted, My purse has gone! Those boys have stolen it! They organized a barbecue so they could steal my purse! Everybody tried to explain to Mrs Moffat that this couldnt possibly be true, but Mrs Moffat called the police. The police arrived and asked golden Richard and golden Philip lots of questions. Richard and Philip couldnt answer the questions. Eventually, they all got into a police car and drove away to the police station. I sat there, pretending to read my book and trying to hide a big, fat purse under the sand on the beach. That was the last summer we went to the beach. My parents never talked about Richard and Philip again.

Soal: 31 Wacana III OIL That oil has helped to shape the world is not an oxygenation. Indeed, the discovery of oil during the last hundred years has changed a great deal of things. An oil product called kerosene has replaced firewood in the kitchen of our cities. Motor vehicles using gasolineor diesel oil have put animal drawn carriges into museums. Steamships have lost against motor vehicles. Diesel locomotives have driven steam locomotives off the rails. Jet planes using aviation feul fly the skies, making remote places reachable in a matter of hours. That oil is indispensable to our everyday lives is not an exaggenaration,

either. Yet few of us ever ask how this important liquid is extracted from the earth and changed into finished products. In the first place, it is not an easy matter to find an oil reserve. Exploration teams, sent by oil companies, have to go to remote places, and sometimes have to live under harsh conditions, to explore the earth or seabed for oil. They study the rock and the soil, and if there are promising result, the next thing for the oil company to do is to send a drilling team to the location. Again, this not a simple matter. Roads, for examples, have to be built first to transport the men and materials to the site. What is worse, the first drilling does not always bring about oil. The drilling team often has to drill up to ten wells before oil is found. An oil product called ... has replaced firewood in the kitchen of our cities. Diesel oil A. Gasoline B. Kerosene C.

Soal: 98 Hot boning is an energy saving technique for the meat processing industry. It has received considerable attention in recent years when increased pressure for energy conservation has accentuated for more efficient methods of processing the bovine carcass. Cooling of an entire carcass requires a considerable amount of refrigerated space, since bone and trimmable fat are cooled along with the muscle. It is also necessary to space the carcasses adequately in the refrigerated room for better air movement and prevention of microbial contamination, thus adding to the volume requirements for carcass chillers. Conventional handling of meat involves holding the beef sides in the cooler for twenty four to thirty six hours before boning. Chilling in the traditional fashion is also associated with a loss of carcass weight ranging from two percent to four percent due to evaporation of moisture from the meat tissue. Early excision, or hot boning, of muscle prerigor followed by vacuum packaging has several potential advantages. By removing, only the edible muscle and fat prerigor, refrigeration space and costs are minimized, boning labor is decreased and storage yields increased. Because hot boning often results in toughening of meat, a more recent approach, hot boning following electrical stimulation, has been used to reduce the necessary time of rigor mortis. Some researchers have found this method beneficial in maintaining tender meat, while others have found that the meat also becomes tough after electrical stimulation.
