THE GOSPEL REVEALED TO BABES.BY JOH STYLES, D.D." In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee,O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid thesethings from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed themunto babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in thysight."— Luke x. 21.Let us now briefly direct our attention to thelatter clause of the text, and show that the thingshidden from the wise and prudent are revealedunto babes, and that this ought to inspire ourTHE GOSPEL REVEALED TO BABES. 207hearts with the liveliest emotions of adoring thanks-giving.In prosecuting this, we shall,I. Show you what that revelation is which theRedeemer affirms was made to babes : II. Provethe truth of the assertion : III. Account for the joy with which the consideration inspired his de-vout and holy bosom.I. To BABES THE LORD OF HEAVE AD EARTHREVEALS THE MYSTERIES OF SALVATIO.The revelation here intended is not what is usu-ally understood by that term when generally appliedto the Scriptures, but what is elsewhere called" the opening of the understanding and the heart."Thus it is revelation by spiritual illumination andinfluence, through the instrumentality of the doc-trines and truths of Christianity. When our Lord, therefore, says that his Father reveals these thingsto babes, he means that he communicates, by hisSpirit, the saving knowledge of the truth.1. Spiritual illumination begins by making a dis-covery to the sinner of his character and state. The

consequence of this is alarm, inquiry, deep andpainful anxiety. When this preliminary is gained,2. The Gospel assumes a new aspect, and appearsworthy of all acceptation to the guilty, the polluted, the poor, the afflicted, the dying.3. This knowledge of himself and the Saviourgradually conducts the humble inquirer to moreextensive views, till, through the blessing of God,he obtains an acquaintance, vivid and experimental, with the whole system of evangelical truth.208 THE GOSPEL REVEALED TO BABES.II. That they are babes to whom GodREVEALS THE MYSTERIES OF SALVATIO.Though after another mariner — a manner suitedto their peculiar condition as the subjects of moralgovernment — this is literally true as it regards themyriads of the human race who die in infancy. It also is literally true as it regards children whoare advanced beyond the stage of infancy, and outof whose mouths, even in this world, the Saviour hasperfected praise. We have all read of children, touched by a light from heaven, meditating, with apower seemingly far beyond their infant years, upon a world to come. Thoughts and feelings, of which we cannot know the full holy virtue, changethem into saints, and make them sigh for heaven. How sweetly have their little voices been heard inhymns, when they knew that they were lying onthe bed of death ! They have told their parentsnot to weep for them; and, having kissed theirbrothers and sisters with such smiles as pass be-tween those who love one another when one of them is about to go away on a visit from which ina few weeks he is to return, they have laid downtheir heads, never to be lifted again till the judg-ment day. Oh ! scoff not at the wonderful pietyyou may not understand. Look into the eyes of your own daughter of seven years as she is sayingher prayers, and disbelieve not the truth told of

creatures young and innocent as she, whom Godtook unto himself, and, ere he stretched out hishand to waft them from earth, showed them aglimpse of heaven. Others, again, have been thusTHE GOSPEL REVEALED TO BABES. 209spiritualized almost in the cradle, who have beendestined to sojourn with us through a long, useful, and blessed pilgrimage. With multitudes of theseit is probable the millennium will commence — " Allthy children shall be taught of the Lord." Evennow I see its dawn : I hear indications of its ap-proach in those infant hosannahs to the Son of David which rise in strains so simple and so holyfrom the congregated thousands in our Sabbath-schools !But we are to understand the description as me-taphorical. Babes signify persons of weak and un-cultivated minds, or the lower classes of mankind, who have not enjoyed the advantages of education, and are not distinguished by mental acquirements." These are denominated babes, because, in relationto the wise and prudent, they are such as childrenare in comparison of men, whose faculties studyhas polished and matured ; confined in their views, and incapable of vigorous exertion of intellect.Of science they know nothing, and of history theyare acquainted with only a few common facts ; theyunderstand no language but their own ; can pursueno train of reasoning, and are unqualified for anyhigher employment than manual labour. Such isthe character of the greater part of those who havegiven evidence, by their pious and holy lives, thatthey had received the Spirit of wisdom and reve-lation in the knowledge of Christ."" By babes, some understand the humble anddocile, in contradistinction to the proud and self-willed, who are wise in their own eyes. It is evi-t 3
