 AMAZON S3 & EC2PERFORMANCE REPORT
OVERVIEW
As an FTP service that runs entirely within the AWS cloud, HostedFTP.com has, based on ourinternal performance data, created this report to discuss the performance you can expectwhen storing and retrieving files between an EC2 instance and S3.
This report covers March 2009 and builds upon the methodology as outlined in our firstreport. For more information please see the February 2009 report.

 ANALYSIS
Our analysis focuses on the data presented in Appendix A and B
STORING FILES
 
(SEE APPENDIX A)
The performance when storing files starts at 0.5 MB/s for small (< 100 KB) files and reachesup to 12 MB/s for large files. This gives a fixed cost of
120ms
along with a variable cost of
10 MB/s
per storage operation.
RETRIEVING FILES

TThe performance when retrieving files starts at 2.9 MB/s for small (< 100 KB) files andreaches up to 12 MB/s for large files. This gives a fixed cost of
10ms
and a variable cost of
8 MB/s
per retrieval operation.

CONCLUSION
From our analysis we can conclude the following:
1.
The fixed cost when storing a file has improved slightly while the variable cost has remained the same.
2.
The fixed cost when retrieving a file has increased to
10ms
while the variable cost hasincreased to
8 MB/s
from
10 MB/s.
