FormerUnion Minister and PMKSriperumbudur candidate'A K Moorthy' today took adig at his rival DMKcandidate and UnionMinister' T R Baalu' forhaving shifted his seatfrom South Chennai,which he had representedfour times as MP, saying he(Mr Baalu) did not haveany faith in the people ofhis constituency.Addressing arally here, Mr Moorthyalleged though people ofSouth ChennaiConstituency placed theirtrust and voted for MrBaalu, a three-time UnionMinister, he had notimplemented any usefulscheme for them.In the samevein, he called Mr Baalu'sbluff on havingimplemented Rs 56,000crore worth schemes inTamil Nadu.The then UnionMinister' DayanidhiMaran' had requestedPMK Founder-Leader' SRamadoss' to stop MrBaalu' from inking anagreement with aMalayasian firm forsetting up a satellitetownship for Chennai.Under theproposal, thegovernment would havetaken possession of55,000 acre of land afterthrowing out some 1.25lakh people, Mr Moorthyclaimed.The PMK leaderthen held an agitationfollowing which theproposal was dropped.On Tamil NaduChief Minister' MKarunanidhi's' claimsaying the laying offoundation stone markedthe fulfillment of a long-pending dream for theChennai Central-EgmoreLink Project, he said tillnow no step had beentaken to complete theproject. ''When he has notbeen able to completethis project, how will hebring Metro Rail Projectto Chennai?'' Mr Moorthyasked.Recallingseveral projects hadcome up inSriperumbudur duringthe reign of AIADMKGeneral Secretary andFormer Tamil Nadu ChiefMinister J Jayalalithaa,he said the previous BJPGovernment at theCentre allocated fundsfor the goldenquadrilateral projectunder which work hadbeen going on for the lastfive years. Land for theproject ''was acquired atlow rates.'' Mr Moorthysaid if he was elected, hewould ensure 50 per centof the jobs here in theconsituency were givento local educatedunemployed and balancefor those from otherdistricts.He promised toprovide educationallowance of Rs 500 amonth to the children ofthose who gave lands forthe project and alsoemployment on completingstudies.Mr Moorthy saidhe had been representingChengalpattuConstituency in Parliamentfor ten years during whichtenure 74 works werecompleted at a cost of Rs22 crore. Thepolice is studying thespeech made byMarumalarchi DMK(MDMK) general secretaryVaiko for his allegedremarks that ''India wouldnot remain one country'' ifSri Lankan PresidentMahinda Rajapaksa did notstop the war against Tamilsin the island nation.''We are studyinghis speech,'' City PoliceCommissioner KRadhakrishnan told UNI,when asked whether thepolice was contemplatingany action against Mr Vaikofor his speech madeyesterday, whileaddressing a protestdemonstration against theLankan government.Mr Vaiko hadmade the remarks, whilesharing platform withPattali Makkal Katchi(PMK) founder-leader SRamadoss, CPI statesecretary D Pandian,BJP leader SuThirunavukarasar andTamil NationalistMovement leader PNedumaran in the protestdemonstration organisedby the Sri Lankan TamilsProtection Committee,an umbrella organisationof various poltical partiesto espouse the cause ofLankan Tamils.The City PoliceCommissioner said thepolice has not receivedany complaint withregard to Mr Vaiko'sspeech.However,sources said the police,in the absence of anycomplaint, could suomotu initiate actionagainst him as ''theoffence is cognizable innature.'' If at all policetake action, Mr Vaikocould be booked undersections 124(a)(sedition), 125(waging war against afriendly government),153 (a) (offences againstpublic tranquility) ofIndian Penal Code (IPC)and under the provisionsof Unlawful Activities(Prevention) Act, 1967.Mr Vaiko wasearlier arrested oncharges of sedition onOctober 21 last year forsupporting the outlawedLTTE, while addressing aparty function in the city.After being in jail for 14days, he was released aspolice did not press for hisremand extension.

Ending the nearly fortnightlong suspense and behindthe scene parleys, theOpposition AIADMK todayfinalised the seat-sharingdeal with its principal ally,the MDMK, and releasedthe list of candidates for the23 seats it would becontesting in the May 13Lok Sabha polls in TamilNadu.The agreement,under which the MDMKhas been allotted four LokSabha seats, was inked byAIADMK supremo JJayalalithaa and MDMKGeneral Secretary Vaikothis morning.A joint statementissued by both the leaderssaid, the MDMK wouldcontest from Virudhunagar,Thanjavur, Erode andNilgiris (Reserved)constituencies.The clinching ofthe deal after hectic parleysand mediation by allianceparty leaders, marked theculmination of the seatsharing agreement inAIADMK-led front.The AIADMK,heading the Third Front inthe state, would contest 23seats. It had allotted sevenseats to PMK, which hadrenewed its ties after a gapof eight years, and threeseats each to the two Leftparties-- the CPI and theCPI(M).There wasconsiderable delay infinalising the pact as theMDMK, which had initiallyasked for eight seats, oneseat more than sevenseats given to PMK,refused to scale down itsdemand.However, whenthe AIADMK suggestedthat it could allot only twoseats, Mr Vaiko believed tohave insisted that it beallotted atleast five seats,one more than it hadcontested in the 2004 LokSabha polls.Finally, theAIADMK made it clear thatit could give only four seats.Till the eleventh hour, MrVaiko had demanded thatthe party be allotted onemore seat, but the AIADMKturned down the request,party sources said.The MDMK,which was in the DMK-ledDPA during the 2004 LokSabha polls, quit the DMKfront, prior to the 2006Assembly elections, afterdifferences with the DMKleadership, over allottmentof seats and joined theAIADMK-led front.The AIADMKwould contest fromTiruvallur (Reserved),South Chennai, CentralChennai, Kancheepuram(Reserved), Vellore,Krishnagiri, Arni,Villuppuram (Reserved),Salem, Namakkal,Tiruppur, Pollachi,Dindugul, Karur, Trichy,Perambalur, Cuddalore,Mayiladuthurai,Sivaganga, Theni,Ramanathapuram,Tuticorin and Tirunelveli.Ms Jayalalithaa, afterclinching the much-awaited deal with theMDMK, wasted no time inreleasing her partycandidates list and hermonth-long campaigntrail, beginning from April16 in the city.She wouldextensively cover all theconstituencies, startingfrom Southern Tirunelvelion April 18 beforeculminating herelectioneering on May 10in the city.There were nosurprises in thecandidates list, which,however, figure severalnew names.Whilenominating old faces forthe constituenciescoming under thesouthern districts, theparty has nominated twowomen candidates -Nammkaldistrict women's Wingsecretary V VairamThamizharasi fromNamakkal and FormerAssembly Speaker P HPandian's wife DrCynthia Pandian fromTuticorin.Former ministerS Raja Kannappan, whohad recently quit theruling DMK and joinedthe AIADMK, wasrewarded with a ticket.The AIADMK strongmanwould contest from hisfavourite Sivagangaconstituency.A few formerstate ministers and ex-Rajya Sabha membersfigure among the list ofcandidates. FormerUnion Minister andparty's propagandasecretary MThambidurai, MLA,would contest from Karur,while former RajyaSabha members O SManian and star speakerand film comedian S SChandran would contestfrom Mayiladuthurai andCentral Chennairespectively.She alsonominated former RajyaSabha member ThangaTamizhselvan fromTheni. Janata party PresidentSubramanian Swamy onThursday criticisedMDMK leader Vaiko'scomments at a publicmeeting here, warning ofa "bloodbath in TamilNadu if anythinghappened" to LTTEleader V Prabhakaranand demanded hisdetention under theNational Security Act.In a partystatement here, Mr.Swamy termed Vaiko'sremarks on Wednesdayas "highly objectionable,anti-national," anddeserving legal action.Mr. Swamy saidPrabhakaran was a"proclaimed offender"who was wanted in theRajiv Gandhiassassination case, andwarning of a 'bloodbath'in Tamil Nadu if he washarmed amounted to"incitement of violenceand disloyalty to thenation."Terming thestatement made by Vaikoas "offensive," Mr.Swamy urged the ChiefMinister M Karunanidhito initiate legal actionagainst the MDMKleader and detain himunder the NSA.

 The MDMK todaydemanded that the Indiangovernment must lift theban on Liberation Tigersof Tamil Eelam (LTTE)and sought the Centre'sintervention to bringabout immediateceasefire in Lanka.Adopting aresolution to this effect,the party's GeneralCouncil, chaired by itsGeneral Secretary Vaiko,alleged that both theDMK government inTamil Nadu and theCongress ledgovernment at the Centrehad cheated the Tamils inSri Lanka.The GeneralCouncil, in anotherresolution, said separateTamil Eelam was the onlysolution to the ethniccrisis in Sri Lanka andcondemned the UPAgovernment for miserablyfailing to find a solution tothe crisis.The GeneralCouncil also resolved towork for the victory ofAIADMK led alliance inthe May 13 Lok Sabhaelections in Tamil Naduand Puducherry.Earlier,addressing the GeneralCouncil, Mr Vaiko saidpartymen should notbother about those whohad quit the party and joined the ruling DMKrecently. ''Let us not talkabout those who had leftus'', he said.After rebelleaders and party MPs LGanesan and Gingee NRamachandran, joined theDMK, after they wereexpelled from the party fortheir anti-party activities,two MLAs, party'sPresidium Chairman MKannappan and CumbumN Ramakrishnan quit theparty and joined the DMKand resigned their MLAseats.
