The In-ternational Society for Krishna Con-sciousness (ISKCON) was founded in1966 by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and is nowbecoming firmly established, with centersin thirty major cities around the worldand world headquarters in Los Angeles,California. The goal of the Society’smembers is to attain love of God byfollowing the principles of
bhakti-yoga,
as taught by the Vedic scriptures andthe disciplic succession of spiritual mas-ters, and to spread love of God to allpeople through the process of
sankirtana
(public chanting of the holy names ofGod). Another important goal of theSociety is to present authoritative litera-ture on the science of God in English andother major languages. The purpose of this handbook is toshow interested persons the full scope ofISKCON’s activities. ISKCON is notconcerned with accumulating financialassets, but aims at producing men andwomen of sublime character. This ispossible only by plain living and highthinking based on the principles of devo-tional service to the Supreme Lord.Sincere souls everywhere are taking tothis genuine movement of God realiza-tion. As is stated in the
Bhagavad-gitii,
“This knowledge is the king of education, the most secret of all secrets. It is thepurest knowledge, and because it givesdirect perception of the self by realiza-tion, it is the perfection of religion. It iseverlasting, and it is joyfully performed."
