Hazardous Substances DOT Classes

The Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA) authorized a plan for training and education of workers engaged in activities related to hazardous waste removal, containment and emergency response. Credible HAZMAT worker education systems must be delivered by qualified organizations that are familiar with the relevant regulations, are positioned close for the workers and have expertise developing and revising such education materials. The federally mandated Hazardous Waste Worker Training Program has established highquality, topical training curricula via a consortium of universities, research labs and non-profit industry groups. The courses have proven successful in raising the degree of safety and health amongst hazardous waste site worker across a number of industries. The Hazardous Waste Worker Training System also performs a prevention function by disseminating the findings of study concerning exposure to hazardous materials to organizations deemed to be at highest danger. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences instituted an application procedure inviting proposals to update the Environmental and HAZMAT worker training programs created in the 1990s. The funding going to the awardees supported the improvement of model programs for the safety and health instruction of workers engaged in activities related to hazardous materials and waste generation, and emergency response.
