ate last year, a luxury Royal Jet chartered by Abu Dhabi’s department o health landedat Incheon International Airport carrying a very special passenger. Eleven-year-old MohamedAl Hadram had been diagnosed with leukemia theyear beore. Upon arrival in Korea, Mohamed wastaken by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital in Seoul’sBanpo-dong district to undergo hematopoietic stemcell transplantation, an advanced procedure in whichstem cells—in this case rom donor bone marrow provided by the National Marrow Donor Program inthe United States—are transplanted to combat someorms o cancer, including leukemia. According to the
 JoongAng Ilbo
newspaper, Mohamed’s mother told thehospital sta, “We were amazed when we heard thatthe transplant procedure is under way,” noting thatsuch a procedure was impossible to obtain in AbuDhabi. In the United States, such a procedure wouldcost twice as much as it does in Korea. In 2011, roughly 150,000 oreign visitors cameto Korea in order to undergo medical treatment atKorean hospitals. Tis was up rom just under 8,000in 2007, and the numbers continue to rise. Tis hasgiven rise to a booming medical tourism industry that brought KRW 200 billion to Korea in 2011. Fororeign patients, Korea’s primary draw is its uniquecombination o high-tech, high-quality medical careat prices ar below those o the United States, Europe, and Japan. Foreign healthcare providers are takingnote, too, as oreign governments increasingly expressinterest in emulating Korea’s healthcare success.
