ATTORNEY-CLIENT COMMUNICATION – PRIVILEGED AND CONFIDENTIAL(DO NOT FORWARD OR SHARE WITH OTHERS)MEMORANDUM TO TEAM MEMBERSFROM: JOHN FLYNNVP/General CounselDATE: SEPTEMBER 13, 2012RE: FAILING AGENDA TOUR – LESSONS LEARNEDAFP has launched the
Obama’s Failing Agenda Tour
in three parts of the country to educate citizensabout bad policies that are being pursued by this Administration and to put grassroots pressure on theadministration and other policy makers to change course. With the launch of the bus tour, there are already some lessons to be learned that I would like to share. Ihave had the chance to speak with several state directors about their experiences, and here are some tipsfor those of you involved in the bus tour:
Be Sure the Speakers Have the Speaker Guidance and Understand These Events are AboutObama’s Policies, Not Him Personally and Certainly Not About Elections
. Everyone should befocused on President Obama’s policies, not on him personally. Speakers should not discuss the personalcharacter of President Obama or his qualifications or fitness for office. The goal of the bus tour is to putgrassroots pressure on policy makers to support policies that advance economic freedom.
If Speakers are Noncompliant, Be Proactive in Correcting Them
(while being respectful to thespeaker). One of our speakers recently told the audience that AFP is trying to defeat President Obamaand that everyone should go to the AFP phone banks and participate in the AFP door-to-door effort tohelp defeat President Obama in November. That speaker received the Speaker Guidance ahead of timeand was briefed beforehand, but clearly went off the reservation. AFP can do everything to prepare thespeaker, but sometimes they do go off message through no fault of AFP. In those cases, it is importantthat AFP correct the record. In this specific situation, the way to handle this would have been for AFP toget up after the speaker (who was compliant at times) and while being respectful to the speaker, remindthe audience that actually AFP’s bus tour is not about elections, but is about Obama’s policies that need tochange and that volunteers at the phone banks and door-to-door activities are helping us promoteeconomic freedom, not influence elections. Of course, if a speaker is being grossly non-compliant and notletting up, you will need to use your best judgment whether it is time to get out the hook and conclude their talk prematurely.
Avoid the Use of Electoral Terms – Voter, Election, Campaign, November
. Some of you may be trained from past jobs to talk about reaching out to “voters,” but AFP is actually reaching out to
