avid Johnson hated everything. He hated the airthat reeked with an awesome stench, the eroded andbroken sidewalk, and the roads that were sprinkledwith trash. The tired and hal destroyed houses on hisblock were as insuerable as the dead grass and longweeds surrounding them. They called this part o UnionCross “The Box.” And Drexter Avenue, where David lived, was all o these things multiplied.“I hate this place,” David would say. “I wish I stayedsomeplace better.”David was lighter than the other black kids at hisschool, a golden brown. He had a generic gure, nottoo big, not too small. His black hair was short, and hewore plain clothes — blue jeans, black sneakers, and anorange sweater.
