emorial Day is the daywhen Americans re-member and honormilitary personnel who lost theirlives while serving their country.Though its unofficial designationas the start of summer makesMemorial Day weekend a time of celebration for many people, thefamilies of fallen and active serv-ice members often find MemorialDay weekend has its fair share of heartache as well.Families of fallen servicemembers tend to find solace inceremonies honoring those whomade the ultimate sacrifice. Butthere are other ways civilian menand women can honor bothactive and fallen service membersin their communities.Participate in communityevents that honor fallen servicemembers. Many communitieshost Memorial Day parades tohonor fallen soldiers. It can becomforting to the families of fall-en soldiers to see fellow membersof their community attend theparade and public memorials.Such civilian support lets familymembers of fallen soldiers knowthat fellow members of their com-munity appreciate and do not for-get the sacrifices made by theirloved ones.Include families of fallen andactive service members in yourweekend activities. MemorialDay weekend is a three-dayweekend at the end of May, whenthe weather is warming up inmuch of the country. The week-end marks the return of backyardbarbecues and pool parties, andsuch events are a great opportu-nity for civilians to invite thefamilies of fallen service membersover to share some fun in the sun.Memorial Day can be an espe-cially difficult time for the lovedones of fallen service members,and even the few hours of relief that a barbecue, pool party orpicnic can provide can make awelcome respite from an other-wise difficult weekend.Make a charitable donation. Numerous charities exist to sup-
