Stair climbing difficulties and using pre-movement to help cope withthem
I would stress that anyone with medical conditions should consult with their doctor or other health professional before trying anything out of their treatment regime-theremay be underlying issues that have to be resolved and doing anything without appropriate consultation and advice can make conditions worse
In some of my other articles, I make mention that people in wealthier societies haveaccess to medical treatment, massage therapists, physical therapists, and other alliedtherapists, and if you do have access to these you are very fortunateIf so then you may not have any interest in this one, but if you do not have access, because of affordability, distance, availability or time factors then you may beIndividual personal circumstances may restrict some people's movement - theirboundaries may be set by a many factors-medical conditions, age, pain, physicalrestrictions, illness or whatever is stopping them having full leg function or movingthemSome seniors can be challenged climbing stairs even this highAs they age, some people lose the ability and confidence to climb stairs, the legs will just not lift high enough to mount the next step so they may trip and fall and possiblycause an injury to themselvesSociety can’t eliminate stairs to benefit individuals, although some such as Australiahave regulations in place to make things easier for those people with a disability byinstalling ramps and special toilets, but generally the individual has to change to suitthe circumstances-if possible
The elderly spend long periods sitting down
During this time the muscles are stiffening through lack of use and walking isdifficult-the brain/mind/muscle combination has separated through lack of use
To demonstrate this effect

Walk around any museum, art gallery, or shopping center for 2 to 3 hours or until thelegs ache-then take go for a coffee and sit down for 20 minutes or so to rest the legs-try not to move themThen stand up straight and walk naturally (if you can) then try climbing the nearestflight of stairs-for the first few of them it is difficult to lift the leg to place the foot onthe step then straighten the leg to bring the other foot to the next step

Pre-Movement for the older person

It is recognized in many areas particularly the sporting one that doing a muscle warm-up before any activity can benefit them by reducing the chances of injuryPre-movement warm-ups for the elderly older can benefit them just as much as theyounger fitter members of our society and reduce
their
chances of injurySimulating a walk before actually attempting it can provide a way of preparing themso that falls may be minimized when the actual attempt is made because it pre-warnsthe legs and brain that movement is imminent

It warms the muscles before intense activity

It passively stretches muscles that have possibly been immobile for many hours

It manually works the calf muscle pump to send some of the used blood up thelegs so it can be replaced by fresh warm blood and warm the feetPassive leg movement followed by active movement can stimulate the stretchreceptors in the muscles and pressure receptors in the bottoms of the feet to startfeedback to the brain-this prepares them for standing and supporting themselves whenthey contact the floor surface
Light Manual Muscle Relaxation-massage-lite uses the stair climbingaction to pre-condition the mind/brain/legs for stair climbingLight Manual Muscle Relaxation the Massage-LiteGreenleg assistance
Light Manual Muscle Relaxation is a massage-lite is a basic simple leg recoverysystem-it is anenvironmentally friendly greensystem because it uses the musclesthemselves to do the work-this means that it does not use oil to achieve its aimsNot using oil makes it more convenient to use as there are no towels to wash whichsaves on washing powder, oil and water being flushed away down the drain-it alsosaves on electricity to run the washing machine which means less carbon released intothe atmosphere

What makes Light Manual Muscle Relaxation so different from otherrecovery systems?

Light Manual Muscle Relaxation combines a sound medical physiological basedtheory with simple movement to offer a practical ongoing system for self recoveryDr Guyton offers the theoretical solution to the problem of aching legs and LightManual Muscle Relaxation offers the practical, tested, simple, oil free, environmentally friendly version'Pumping caused by external Compression of the Lymphatics'
Guyton-Textbook of Medical Physiology eighth edition-1991 W.B. Saunders Company-ISBN0-726-3994-0 (p. 182)
Light Manual Muscle Relaxation is a Do-It-Yourself method based onencouraging the muscles and tissues to assist with their owncirculation
