laudia Garcia, a lawyerwith Paz y Esperanza’sHuánuco office, represents over 250 womenand children in sexual anddomestic violence cases inHuánuco, Peru. Her task is toensure access to justice forvictims of sexual and domesticviolence in a climate where thejustice system is corrupt, and where victims fearretaliation by attackers, are ashamed and blamedfor the attack, and will likely be revictimized in anypolice or judicial investigation. Unfortunately, according to statistics, over 50 cases of child sexualabuse are reported every week in this region ofunder a million people, giving it the second highestrate of violence against women in Peru. Most cases gounreported, and fewer are prosecuted.Claudia is a valiant defender of women and childrenin Huánuco. Because of her work, she has beenharassed, defamed, threatened and sued by childmolesters. Claudia needs our prayers for protection, strength and courage in the face of such adversity.
