At TEA PARTY EVENTS, APRIL 15, 2009The unanimous Declaration of the Free People of the united States of America
When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary forThe People to rise up against the political band of FederalThieves and Class Warriors who have disconnected them fromone another and to assume among the powers of the earth, thefreedom and liberty to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes whichimpel them to Protest. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are createdequal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certainunalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and thepursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights,Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their justpowers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it isthe Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institutenew Government, laying its foundation on such principles andorganizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem mostlikely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not bechanged for light and transient causes; and accordingly allexperience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed tosuffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when along train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably thesame Object evinces a design to reduce them under absoluteDespotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to object to suchGovernment, and in future elections to provide new Guards fortheir security. — Such has been the patient sufferance of theseCitizens; and such is now the necessity which constrains themto reform their Systems of Government. The history of therecent Federal Government is a history of repeated injuries andusurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of anabsolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts besubmitted to a candid world. The Congress has refused its Assent to Live within Our Means, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good. The Congress and President have usurped state Legislaturesand Governors to pass unfunded mandates of allegedimmediate and pressing importance, such as threatening to cutoff fuel taxes for road construction unless the states submit toCongress' authority. The Congress and the President have refused to enact otherLaws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unlessthose people would bundle pay-to-play political kickbacks, aright inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only. They have called together political front-groups at placesunusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of hiding them from view and tricking us into compliance with their measures. They have sent their attack dogs against critics, for opposing with manly firmness their invasions on the rights of the people. They have endeavoured to prevent the population of theseStates by disrespecting life; and to overpopulate these States forthat purpose obstructing the Laws for Immigration; refusing topass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raisingthe conditions of new private investment. They have obstructed the Administration of Justice by enactingblatantly unconstitutional Laws and eroding the Separation andBalance of Powers, and by refusing their Assent to permit theminority party to participate in legislative conferences. They have made Congress dependent on their Will alone forthe tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries. They have erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hitherswarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out theirsubstance. They have kept among us, in times of peace, Standing PoliticalFraud Armies of ACORN and Union operatives without theConsent of our workers. They have affected to render the Military obsolete and aninferior defensive Power. They have combined with others to subject us to a jurisdictionforeign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws;giving their Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:For Making Your Mortgage My Problem:For protecting Union Organizers from punishment for any secret-ballot violations which they should commit on theInhabitants of these States:For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:For imposing Carbon and other Taxes on us without ourConsent:For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Jury Nullification:

Despite the inclusion of my portrait, I did not write this. My own new Declaration is available below: www.scribd.com/Thomas-Jefferson
