T SEEMS ALL
butinevitable: afterRamadan we alllose some steam. Somemore than others, butit’s a fact nonetheless.Shaytaan is unchained, and he resumes hiswhisperings. We be-come more lax in ourobservance of our dailySalawah as well– espe-cially Fajr. If our Ee-maan was a bottle onthe shore after Rama-dan, it would be gradu-ally slipping out to sea.But that’s only if weallow it to, for Allaahknows our Eemaan willnot remain at a con-stant level all the time.If we were to draw agraph of our Eemaanover the years, it wouldprobably have numerouspeaks and valleys. Each Ramadan givesus the opportunity tocheck ourselves and getback on course, andthough our intensity mayfade a bit after Eid-ul-Fitr, we should all try toelevate our Eemaan to ahigher level each Rama-dan.Staying steadfast is justas important as the fast, and is easier said thandone. But there are manytools at our disposal for usto show that we came outof Ramadan with some-thing we did not have be-fore. One sure killer of theRamadan spirit is to ceaseattending the masjid– youand the children’s ma-drassa. Particular empha-sis was also placed on theweekly live tele-linksfrom the scholars, themost recent being themid-Ramadan conferencewhere the turnout sur-passed all expectations Alhamdulillah.

learn the religion that the Com-panions were upon. He shouldlearn that way of life and worship Allaah based upon it. He shouldfamiliarize himself what the Com-panions were upon and learn aboutthe evidences that they used forthe positions that they held. This isthe way of the Salafi – to know thereligion that the Prophet(sallAllaahu alayhe wasallam)taught to his Companions – to holdfast to it, to follow them and to stayaway from innovations. The creed of Salafiyyah is that the people cannot(correctly) understand the Qur’aanand the Sunnah without referring tothe guidance of the Companions.

 WHOEVER ABANDONS THESALAAH HAS DISBELIEVED
Imaam Ahmad mentioned in histreaty entitled Usool-us-Sunnah(the Principles of the Sunnah) thatestablishing the salaah (prayer) isfrom the pillars of the religion and
whoever gives it up, has disbe-lieved
. He mentioned that the Com-panions held the opinion that who-ever abandons the salaah is a disbe-liever. He (Imaam Ahmad) pointedout the statement of the Taabi’ee(follower) Abdullah bin Shaqeeqwho said: “The Companions of theProphet Muhammad (sallAllaahualayhe wasallam) were of the viewthat there is nothing from amongstthe actions, the abandonment of which constitutes disbelief exceptfor the prayer.” [Tirmidhi]In explaining this position of theCompanions, he said that theynever considered any single act, other than the abandoning of sa-laah, as an act which would take aperson out of the fold of Islaam, making him a disbeliever. Hequoted this narration from aTaabi’ee (Successor) Abdullah Ibn

O
you who believe! Keepyour duty to Allaahand fear Him, andspeak (always) the truth. He willdirect you to do righteous gooddeeds and will forgive you yoursins. And whosoever obeys Al-laah, and His Messenger he hasindeed achieved a greatachievement
”
[Al-Ahzaab 33:70-71]
It is known that the Deen(religion) of Islaam is the final of allreligions. This is so because theProphet Muhammad (sallAllaahualayhe wasallam)is the
seal
of allthe Prophets and Messengers.Based on this, it is upon every per-son living on this earth and thosewho will be born afterwards, tolearn the Deen of Islaam and adhereto it.The religion of Islaam is builtupon great pillars as the ProphetMuhammad (sallAllaahu alayhewasallam)clarified by saying,“Islaam is based on five principles;to testify that none has the right tobe worshipped but Allaah and thatMuhammad is the Messenger of Al-laah, to offer the (compulsory con-gregational) prayers, to pay the Za-kaat (charity), to observe fast dur-ing the month of Ramadaan and toperform Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mak-kah) for those who are able to do so.[Bukhari, Muslim]Therefore, one must enter intomonotheism (
tawheed
). He must bea monotheist, testifying to the twotestimonies (bearing witness thatthere is no god worthy of worshipexcept Allaah, and that Muhammad(sallAllaahu alayhe wasallam) isHis Prophet and Messenger) andimplementing monotheism.
Tawheed
(monotheism) stands upontwo great foundations, which
all
theMessengers called to.
{And verily, We have sent among every na-tion a Messenger (proclaiming):“Worship Allaah (alone), andavoid (or keep away from) Taag-hoot (all false deities)…}
[An-Nahl 16:36]So, they are: sincerity upon theDeen (religion) and upon the wor-ship of Allaah after knowing Him,glorified is He; and disbelieving inat-Taaghoot i.e. being free frompolytheism (shirk), its people, andfrom every religion other than thereligion of Islaam.
ESTABLISHING THE SALAAH
Then after that, the second pillar isestablishing the salaah (five dailyprayers). The prayer is the secondpillar from the pillars of Islaam.Imaam Ahmad,

the imaam of Ahlus-Sunnah has mentioned that thegreat principle of Islaam is: “holdingfast to what the Companions of theMessenger of Allaah (sallAllaahualayhe wasallam) were upon, takingthem (and their way) as a model tobe followed, and abandonment of innovations.”This is the
basis of knowledge
,meaning that the person should

them or fight against them?” TheProphet (sallAllaahu alayhe wasal-lam) said, “No, unless you see cleardisbelief.” [Muslim]; and in anothernarration, “No, as long as they es-tablish the prayer.” [Muslim] ThePeople of Knowledge have clarifiedthat from these two evidences, itbecomes apparent that abandon-ment of the prayer is
clear disbe-lief
.
 ACTION MUST ACCOMPANYFAITH
We are mentioning these matters toshow the importance of salaah sothat no one will think that
tawheed
alone is sufficient for one to be Mus-lim. Indeed, it is a pillar of Islaamand whoever abandons it, his Is-laam becomes destroyed. We alsomention this because today we findthat some of the People of the Sun-nah affirm that whoever gives up allactions in entirety still remains aMuslim. Without any doubt, this isthe opposite of what the Compan-ions of the Prophet (sallAllaahualayhe wasallam)were upon, as wasclarified by Imaam Ahmad.

Shaqeeq, using it as evidence(daleel) showing that this was some-thing that the Companions wereupon. So, this is what Imaam Ahmadclarified: that the Companions heldthe view that whoever abandons theprayer
completely
, never praying,then even if he displays (signs of)Islaam and utters the two testimo-nies;
he is not a Muslim
. He men-tioned this from Abdullah binShaqeeq and it was also mentionedby Imaam Al-Bukhaaree who re-ported from the Salaf i.e. the Com-panions and those who came afterthem, that they hold the view thatwhoever intentionally left off
one
obligatory prayer until the time forthe prayer elapsed, not having anyexcuse for it, then by that he be-comes a disbeliever. If we were to look at the authen-tic evidences from the Prophet
(Continued from page 2)
(sallAllaahu alayhe wasallam) inboth of the authentic collections of hadeeth (al-Bukhaaree & Muslim)and other than them, we would findthat this is clearly proven. Fromthat is the saying of the ProphetMuhammad (sallAllaahu alayhewasallam)
The pact which isbetween us and them is the prayer;whoever gives it up, has disbe-lieved.”[Tirmidhi]. Also, the sayingof the Prophet Muhammad(allAllaahu alayhe wasallam)
Between a man and shirk and kufr(disbelief) is neglecting theprayer.”[Muslim]Furthermore, when the Prophet

(sallAllaahu alayhe wasallam)mentioned the leaders who wouldchange and abandon uprightnessupon Islaam, and who would displayinjustices and sins, some of theCompanions said to him(sallAllaahu alayhe wasallam)

Shall we not go out against them?Shall we not raise the sword against

- such is the importance of Salaah that whoever abandons it is regarded as a disbeliever. How many of us still take this lightly?
