Topic Four: Do / Does / Did

A) We use do/ does for the present simple


- I don't like hot weather but Raphael does (= Raphael likes hot weather)
- Emily works hard but I don't (= I don't work hard)
" Do you enjoy school John?"
"Yes, I do."

B) We use do / does in present simple questions:

Do/Does + Subject + infinitive (without to)

C. We use did for the simple past:


"Did you and Josephine enjoy the film?"
"I did but Monica didn't. (= Monica did not enjoy the film.)
" I enjoyed the film."
"I did too." (= I enjoyed it too.)
"Did it rain yesterday?"
"No, it didn't."

D. Questions with always/usually/often (adverbs of frequency):

Do you always have breakfast?


Does Raquel often play the piano?
What do you usually do on Saturday?
What do you do? = What's your job?
How do you do? = polite greeting to someone
E. Short answers

Yes, I/we/you/they do. No, I/we/you/they don't.


Yes, He/she/it does. No, He/she/it doesn't.
