The Forbidden City
Jean-Paul Desroches, Guillaume Fonkenell,
and Isabelle Leroy-Jay Lemaistre

An enigmatic locale that has long fascinated the

West, the Forbidden City of Peking is explored in
this chronicle. It reveals how the city has always
been reserved for imperial families and their cir-
cles of acquaintances only, remaining taboo to the
Chinese people, who were not allowed to ap-
proach it nor even look at it. It explains what it
took to realize what is regarded as the most im-
portant architectural project in China, and docu-
ments how its construction spanned 14 years and
required over a million workers. More than five
centuries of the city’s history is revisited, detailing
an array of magnificent treasures secretly passed
down through its generations. Focusing on several
exceptional pieces, the examination places them
beside recognizably Western works, and reflects on
the Far East’s remarkable influence on the other
side of the world.

Jean-Paul Desroches is the director at Guimet’s 15

museum. Guillaume Fonkenell and Isabelle Leroy-
Jay Lemaistre are codirectors of the sculptures and

Jewellery

The Kiev Hoards in the British Museum

and Related Material
Ljudmila Pekarska

The treasures discovered from the prime of dynastic Kiev—

namely the nearly 70 medieval hoards of gold and silver jew-
elry of the ruling powers, nobility, and the Christian
Church—are documented in this beautiful book. The splendor
of a once powerful cultural and political center of Eastern Eu-
rope is evidenced by these pieces that are unique to Kiev.
Their artistic workmanship and magnificence of style enriches
the understanding of Kievan art and allows it to stand on its
own as separate from Byzantine art history. Featuring objects
that have never been published outside the former Soviet
Union, this survey provides a complete picture of the three
largest medieval hoards unearthed in the now-Ukrainian
city—in 1906, 1842, and 1824—while tracing the history and
whereabouts of other lost treasures and providing invaluable

Performing / Painting
in Tokugawa Japan
Alexander Hofmann

This pioneering study investigates painting as performance—or

the execution of paintings in the presence of an audience—in
Japan during the period between the 16th and 19th centuries.
The various socioeconomic settings and functions of this artis-
tic practice are analyzed, from elite entertainments and ex-
pressions of community to alternative artistic identities and
public relations events. The shared experience between artist
and observer is considered as well as the resultant artwork,
contending that the concept of painting as performance de-
pends on the circumstances of execution and the social rela-
tions between those involved. Representing the first attempt
at confronting this subject in a methodical manner, it draws
from copious research in the fields of Japanese history, art his-
tory, and visual cultures studies, highlighting this unique
process as a phenomenon worthy of enquiry.

Metatextile: Identity and
History of a Contemporary
Art Medium
Edited by Tristan Weddigen

The use of medium as a technique, material, and metaphor within

contemporary art, architecture, and criticism is addressed in this
study that illustrates the relevance of textiles. It reveals how the rise
of textiles as a prominent art form since the 1990s has not been
subjected to comprehensive historical and theoretical reflection thus
far. Attempting to map out some of the several meanings and func-
tions of textiles in contemporary art so as to articulate a “metatex-
tile” theory or a “textile discourse,” the book discusses central
aspects of the contemporary medium from identity, myth, and
clothing to technology, architecture, ornament, anthropology, phe-

The Colors of War

Bryan’s Color Photographs
Photographs by Julien Bryans

Vividly documenting the beginning of World War II,

this collection of photographs illustrates Warsaw’s
September 1939 capture by German troops. The vic-
tims of the event’s military deployment are por-
trayed in an array of shattering images that chronicle
the two weeks preceding the historic siege of the
Polish capital. Through the only photographic docu-
ments that captured this era in color, this compila-
tion shows the striking perspective of Warsaw’s
actual residents. It also includes photographs origi-
nally recorded by the photographer on black-and-
white film, which were later subjected to a

Award, this study underscores the significance of science in terms of
comprehending society today. Taking on the common mechanistic
conception of the world, the book asserts that this way of rationaliz-
ing can change through the findings of modern physics. It stresses
the importance of the human race experiencing themselves not only

instead of material possessions. Pleading for a more integral analysis

The Illustrated
History of the
Hungarian Jews
From the Beginnings
up to the Present
Katalin Jalsovszky, Emoke Tomsics,
and Zsuzsanna Toronyi

From the Ancient Roman Empire to the

present day, the life of the Jewish people
in Hungary is documented, aiming to fill
the current gap that exists in their history.
The analysis focuses on the social and cul-
tural circumstances of this population as
well as their background, considered
within the context of Hungary’s own past.
The chapters journey through the middle
ages, the reform age, World War I, and the
Holocaust, which concluded with the ex-
termination of the Hungarian Jewry—con-
sidered one of Europe’s largest and most 29
important Jewish communities. Accentuated with a striking array of photographs capturing archeological artifacts, architec-
tural relics, and works of art, this consideration delves into this community’s religion, daily life, and the prominent role they
have played in the cultural and economic life of modern Hungary. A collection of authentic documents—some of which have
been unpublished until now—is also featured.

Katalin Jalsovszky and Emoke Tomsics are historians and museologists. They work in the historical photo archives of the
Hungarian National Museum in Budapest and are the coauthors of several historical photographic albums on Budapest and
other subjects. Zsuzsanna Toronyi is a museologist and an archivist. She is the director of the Hungarian Jewish archives and
the author of numerous publications as well as the curator of several exhibitions. She is a recipient of the Scheiber Prize for
her cultural and educational work on behalf of the Jewish population of Hungary.

an article about sources on Eugenio Pacelli in Munich’s
church archives. Eloquently contributing to the scholarly

Alvar Aalto
The Mark of the Hand
Edited by Harry Charrington and Vezio Nava

Showcasing the famed architect’s creative accomplish-

ments, this chronicle travels through a series of conver-
sations with the members of Alvar Aalto’s workshop
that span a period of 50 years from 1944 to 1994. More
than 60 projects are covered, discussing the full range
of Aalto’s craft and journeying far beyond the limited
canon of buildings usually discussed in critiques of his
work. Placing these projects in their own time and
among the people and milieu that cultivated them, the
study illustrates these structures not just as artifacts but
as part of a dynamic—and often contentious—environ-
ment, demonstrating how the workshop itself formed
an integral part of Aalto’s achievements.

Harry Charrington is an architect who has worked at and

written extensively on the Alvar Aalto workshop. He
completed his doctoral degree based on Alvar Aalto’s
social and artistic practice. He is the author of The
House of Culture, a lecturer at the University of Bath,
34 and the former curator of the exhibition Alvar Aalto:
Process & Culture in London. He has built and taught in
Finland, France, and the United Kingdom. Vezio Nava is
an architect who worked at the Alvar Aalto workshop,
where he was involved in the detailed design of several
projects, including Finlandia Hall. He is the former job
architect for the Riola Church in Italy, which took nearly
15 years to complete. He is a founding member and
board member of the Finnish Committee for the
Restoration of Viipuri Library, has lectured in Finland
and abroad, and has contributed articles to several
professional publications.

Urban
Interventions
Edited by Matús Vallo and Oliver Sadovský

A three-year enterprise is charted in this volume

that chronicles the editors’ survey of their archi-
tectural colleagues, which asked them to identify
problems in their cities and seek solutions for
them. This series of projects received consider-
able public attention and media and the study
digs deeper, exploring new possibilities for dia-
logue regarding public space that exists between
the triumvirate of architects, municipal officials,
and the general public. The collected interviews
focus mainly on exhibitions in major cities such
as Bratislava in Slovakia or Prague and Brno in
the Czech Republic, as well as blogs and presen-
tations surrounding individual projects. Illustrat-
ing these projects as processes that can bring
about significant progress in the field, this dis-
cussion divides its content between the texts of
the featured architects and the details of the 60
fascinating projects in question. This edition is 35
