MagmeterMaterial SelectionGuide
Solving theLiner and ElectrodeSelection Puzzle
ABB Inc., manufactures magnetic flowmeters with liners of Teflon, (PTFE & PFA), Tefzel®, polyurethane, neoprene, andrubber. Teflon, Tefzel, and some rubbers are food gradematerials. Magmeters approved for sanitary service carry a 3-Aauthorization. Flange gaskets are made of Teflon, neoprene, andKlinger Sil 4101®. Teflon is used with Teflon lined magmeterswhile neoprene lined flange type magmeters.
Raised Face and Flat Face Flanges
Pipe flange mating surfaces can be flat face or raised face. Theraised face design has a slightly raised (about 1/16 inch) portioninside the bolt circle, which is used as the sealing surface. Theflat face flange is flat across its entire flange surface. There should be no difficulty creating a seal between a flat faceflange and a raised face flange because there is sufficient raisedface area for proper sealing. However, when a liner material isadded to the raised face area, the gap between the magmeter flange and the mating pipe flange becomes obvious. It will bemore obvious when both magmeter and mating flanges areraised face than when one of them is flat faced. This is not a problem, unless the pipe fitter attempts to close thegap by over tightening the flange bolts. This could damage theliner, and if the mating flange and pipe are of a nonmetalmaterial such as plastic, it could crack. The Teflon, Tefzel and polyurethane lined meters have raisedfaced flanges rated as specified. The neoprene and hard-rubber lined meters have full faced flanges rated as specified. Twoflange gaskets are supplied per meter; the mounting studs andnuts are furnished by the user.Flange nuts should be tightened in an alternate pattern(e.g., 1-3, 2-4) to produce equal pressure distribution aroundthe flange face. Bolt torque should be limited to the values andprocedures detailed in the Installation and Operations Manual. For Teflon-lined meters, the bolt-torque must be sufficient toforce the flared liner flat against the flange’s raised face.
