Why Mentoring?What Does It Take?
Jeanette Nadonley, DC, BAMarch 9, 2013
 What is a Mentor?
If you look up "mentor" in the dictionary, you'll find itmeans a "trusted guide," a "provider of wise counsel,"a "confidant."
A mentor may be either gender. They representknowledge, reflection, insight, and wisdom. They offerunderstanding, compassion, strategy, and good advice. They engender trust, issue a challenge, provideencouragement, and offer the mentee a positive visionof themselves.
Mentors are role models.
What kids see is what they'll be. What kind of rolemodels do we want them to have? It is a matter of choice. Children learn by observing the people aroundthem.
Who do we want to populate their life? Childhood canbe hard and full of disappointments, pain, loss, anddisillusionment. Youth have choices to make that havelifelong implications. Today's children often develop self-doubt and a doubt in the world. We can't fully protectthem from this. It's a natural part of the humanexperience. But what we can do is help them build uptheir immunity to doubt. We need to help them findhope. We have to help them develop their owncharacter. Pop culture can't do that. Immature peerscan't do that. But a mentor can.
