Sackets Harbors Home Town Heroes War of 1812 Bicentennial Street Banners Celebrating the War of 1812 Bicentennial, the Village of Sackets Harbor launched a highly visible commemorative program War of 1812 Bicentennial Home Town Heroes banners, displayed on utility poles with American flags throughout the historic community. Initiated by the Villages Marketing Advisory Committee, banner sponsorship sold out within days of the programs announcement. Thirty-seven banners each feature the name of an individual who participated in the War of 1812, along with the name of the banner sponsor. Banners feature the well known, and the not-so-well-known heroes of the war. Supported by private and public groups, businesses, families, and individuals, these banners reflect the importance of the War of 1812 here through the overwhelming success of banner sales. Look for banners with ships joiner Joshua Pickering, 3rd Artillery Major Samuel Nye, Lieutenant Colonel John Mills of the Albany Volunteers, or Governor Daniel Tompkins and President James Madison. From Private Benjamin Gurnee to Brigadier General Leonard Covington, the names of a wide range of War of 1812 Bicentennial Home Town Heroes line the streets of this heritage community. Visit Sackets Harbor this summer and see if you can find all 37 banners!
