APRIL 2008
In December 2007, we learned that a City ofCalgary Park Planner was appointed the taskof hiring a consultant to develop a managementplan for River Park, Sandy Beach and theBritannia escarpment. On March 10, a City of Calgary Park Planner,a Natural Parkland Management coordinator,a Community Recreation Coordinator andthe Ward 8 alderman met with severalrepresentatives from each River Parkstakeholder group at the South CalgaryCommunity Association.Previous to the meeting, chairs of the variousstakeholder groups were asked to providethe following:our roles and expectationsour status and operating characteristicsOn behalf of Friends of River Park Society, Isubmitted our purpose/role, our commitment, things we oppose and our expectationsand recommendations. The hiring process has begun and $120,000(considered an average amount to spend) hasbeen set aside for development of themanagement plan. A consultant should behired within two months. At the meeting, we were asked to providesuggestions for the public consultationprocess. Only a few points were mentioned:input from recognized groupssenior citizen representationhealth and safety factorstraffic and parkingAfter the meeting I emailed the followingsuggestions to the planner:an open, transparent processaccountable to the publicminutestimely feedback made available throughdifferent sources(website, bulletin boarddisplay, community newsletters, boothset-up in park at various times)The process is expected to take 12 - 18months, at which point, a detailed plan will betaken to City council for funding as a capitolproject. Watch for upcoming opportunities toprovide input. The Park Grass Needs our HelpAt this time of year, the grass in River Park issparse and sensitive, so lend a hand. Pleaseuse the trail as much as possible until thegrass gets established.Motorized Vehicles in the ParkAfter recently watching the bylaw truckdriving through River Park, Susan S and Ihad a discussion with the bylaw officer aboutthe damage caused to the grass. He wasquite receptive. Later in the month, I sawthe bylaw truck driving slowly along thenorth/south trail. Thanks Team!River Park is looking quite clean, largely due toour efforts. Many thanks to volunteers for re-stocking the bag dispensers.
