t 14, Suhas Gopinathwas the world’s youngestCEO when he startedGlobals Inc. in San Jose,California, in 2000. Thecompany shifted to India in 2004, andis now a Bangalore-based MNC offeringoffshore development, IT consultancy, software development, web developmentand various other services with offices inthe US, Canada, Bahrain, Italy, the UK,Germany, Spain and Australia.Suhas is now 22. In a true conquer- the –world- style, he is foraying into Europeto set up new offices there. The WorldEconomic Forum recently selectedhim as one of 2008’s Young GlobalLeaders, an honour bestowed upon young professionals the world over inrecognition of their accomplishments, societal commitment and contributionwith a potential in shaping the future of the world. With this, Subhas becomes the youngest member of the Young GlobalLeaders Forum. He has also receivedthe prestigious Young Achiever’s Award by the European Parliamentand International Association forHuman Values. We have seen perfection all around usin the recent times. Media coverageon the success stories of best people, unbelievable entrepreneurs, childprodigies and illustrious students, isoverwhelming. But, as individuals we cannot deny thefact that it is not all that easy to becomea perfect individual. No matter how hardwe try, we act in ways that cause us tomake the wrong life decisions almost allthe time. Excellence and perfection have very little place in our daily life. It is true
Collective harmony, notindividual glorification!
that society appreciates excellence in allits form. People who excel are wantedby every organization. But do we realizethat it is a by product of several othercomponents over which we do not havetotal control? It is often coupled withother forces in operation around us inthe universe. We cannot for instance deny the fact thatmany of these so called perfectionists endup with psychosomatic disorders. How do we account for the drudgery, illnessand dejection that happen to haunt many such perfectionist. Suhas Gopinath may be a great young achiever. But is thisa matter for everyone to emulate? No!There are some hard lessons each of us needs to learn from life’s bounteousexperiences. The definition of perfectionand excellence needs to be redefined forour society with such disparities.“In most situations what you don’t know is so overwhelmingly more importantthan what you do know that you have nobusiness acting on what you know,” saidNobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman. Can we truly claim that we can acton our own with integrity? Can we becertain that our decisions are perfect? As we celebrate the 61st independenceday with the huge conglomerationof cultures, religions, languages andtraditions that are varied in every senseof the term, we need to accelerate ourcollective efforts towards total literacy, quality education and a meaningfuleducation. We need to meet somewherein common and synergise our effortsin moving towards not just individualglorification but a collective harmony.
