This month I want to share with you the
rie itself. It’s a long time since I havewritten about a rie and those were the onesI customised myself, so bare with me. As therie is based on the Anschutz 2013 action/trigger it is not an uncommon occurrence to seethis around a club range; as it is used reliablyby prone and three position shooters acrossthe UK. When considering the rie design, Iwanted something that could shoot in the LightVarmint (10.5 pound) class, but where further weight could be added to use in the unlimitedclass. I also wanted a reliable action andbarrel. Considering this in the rst instance I didwant to go for a Hall action from the US, with aBorder Barrel. Sadly this was just not meant tobe with the time frame I had to get the rie builtfor the European Championships. Getting theHall action from the states was a more difcultventure than hoped for by ‘JR’ over at Border Barrels. I must say both of us tried really hardand maybe this is a project for the future as Iwould like to get more UK based gunmaker’sinterested in developing rimre benchrestries. I would like to thank JR O’Neal andBorder Barrels for all their efforts on my behalf.With my rst efforts being abortive I Iooked atmy second option which was the Anschutzaction and barrel. Again I had problems inthe UK being able to select the action withthe specic select barrel and making this riefrom scratch to meet my design criteria. I didwant to have this rie made, or a leastcustomised, in the UK. In the end I had to go toItaly to have what I wanted and within the timeframe I had in mind. As I stated recently, theItalians really have got things sussed inshooting as a standard city shooting range likeMilan are second to none and sadly put our ‘best’to shame. The same can be said of theequipment and resources they have access tofor Rimre Benchrest. They have a good number of manufacturers available to them, supplyingries and equipment that we are only justseeing over in the UK. (Again this might be a signfor some adventurous company to start bringing

in this equipment or for gunmakers in the UKto start competing with US and other Europeancontemporaries.) A name you have read in thiscolumn a few times is that of Varide Cicognani,as he manufactures everything that a benchrestshooter would want. Therefore with cap in handand an ever shortening deadline I went to him toask for help. The specication I asked for was;• Anschutz 2013 action/ trigger • Selected barrel 500mm• Cicognani stock black/grey (Edgedesign)• Pillar bedding• Butt plate in titanium• weight well + weights + titanium top• Barrel Stabiliser - silver • 30mm Scope Rings• Scope mounted spirit level• Cleaning guideVaride came back within a short space of timeand said he could get this built in time and withthe month that I gave myself as a minimumto practice and get myself and the rie tunedfor the competition in Milan. Relief at last!!One thing I did want is the McMillan Edge stockas this is the latest in design from the US andreally does perform well from all reports.Although this was an option, Varide offered thesame design but in a laminated wood nish.This really does look the part and offsets therie furniture really well. Although glass breis recommended for a benchrest rie I couldnot resist this stock and went for it as it kept tothe design I was looking for; and within weight!From the picture you can see stages of the stockmanufacture, using very accurate CNCrouting machinery. The overall effect with therie furniture is very pleasing; coupled with theaccurate tracking in the bags, this stock issomething else. Machining is very accurate andts the action superbly. This is then bedded usingfour aluminium pillars, as there are four actionbolts on the 2013 action. Using four action boltsis, I think, unique to the design of this action, asmost use two action bolts. It is liked by some,but others feel it is hard to get the compressioncorrect and consistent when tightening thesebolts. Whatever your feelings are on this matter,the 2013 action does have a good track recordand has performed very well in this rie so far.The rie itself is fully customised to myrequirements – being of a silver/ grey / blackcolour scheme - and I wanted it to t into the10.5 pound section and have a weight thatcould be added to the rear of the stock to addthe advantage that extra weight in shootingan unlimited rie brings. This has worked well,taking the rie from 10.5 pounds to over 11pounds in weight. Although I am still looking at
