Limiting Reactants

Objective

Students will determine the limitingreactant from a given amount of reactantsby applying the law of conservation of matter.Students will show attainment of theobjective by answering a series of limitingreactant problems and creating their ownlimiting reactant problem.

1)The conservation of atoms in chemical reactionsleads to the principle of conservation of matterand the ability to calculate the mass of productsand reactants. As a basis for understanding thisconcept:a) Students know how to describe chemicalreactions by writing balanced equationse) Students know how to calculate the masses of reactants and products in a chemical reactionfrom the mass of one of the reactants orproducts and the relevant atomic masses.
