You’ve probably learned a bit about Korea’s flavorful food and the etiquette involved in dining withyour colleagues and friends. Now, you need to know how to order just what you’d like off themenu in your local restaurant!
First, some useful vocabulary:
Kimchi
(
김치
):
vegetables
(usually
cabbage,
white
radish,
or
cucumber)
commonly
fermented
in
a
brine
of
ginger,
garlic,
green
onion,
and
chili
pepper.
Bibimbap
(
비빔밥
,
"mixed
rice"):
rice
topped
with
seasoned
vegetables
such
as
spinach,
mushrooms,
sea
tangle,
carrots,
or
bean
sprouts,
and
served
with
a
dollop
of
gochujang
(red
pepper
paste).
Jeon
(
전
):
a
Korean
pancake
‐
like
dish.
Fermented
kimchi
or
seafood
is
mixed
into
a
flour
‐
based
batter
and
then
fried
in
an
oiled
pan.
Gogi
gui
(
고기구이)
:
refers
to
a
variety
of
grilled
dishes
(
gui
)
that
have
meat
as
the
basic
ingredient.
Gui
made
with
fish
is
called
saengseon
gui
(
생선구이
),
which
literally
means
"grilled
fish",
while
grilled
shellfish
are
called
seokhwa
gui
(
석화구이
)
or
jogae
gui
(
조개구이
).
