News of thecurrent economic crisis iseverywhere, and Mt. Julietis not immune to the cuts inemployment or the increaseof families in need: thenumber of families turningto the Mt. Juliet Help Centerfor assistance has nearlydoubled compared to thistime last year, and thenumbers are increasing asApril marches on.“The increase in thenumber of people asking forhelp is dramatic,” remarkedHelp Center Director CarolynDuggan.Duggan said inMarch 2008 the Help Centergave food and assistanceto 124 families, or 389individuals (1,006 bags). InMarch 2009 the number wasup to 228 families, or 734individuals (2,002 bags). She added that the numberof families assisted as of April 10 was up to 71, “andit’s only the second week.”She attributed much of theMarch numbers to school-aged children being out of school for Spring Break and“cleaning out the house.”“Kids were home fortwo weeks and just cleanedout their parents’ kitchens,”Duggan said. “That was foodthat had to last longer, and alot of those families probablyhad children who get freelunches at school. A lot of it also has to do with peoplelosing their jobs recently – they’ve lost income and can’tbuy food and pay everythingelse they have to.”The number of peopleneeding food and assistanceis up from last year, Duggansaid, with 189 familiesneeding help in December2008 and January 2009,and 187 in February of this year.A much-needed and well-timed donation arrivedat the Help Center recentlyfrom the two Curves
tnesscenters of Mt. Juliet, whichcompeted against oneanother in a food drive andtogether donated over 2,000pounds of food.“(The donated food)came at an unbelievabletime,” Duggan remarked.“Our shelves were empty.”
