Brief 5Children’s Book Board 1/5The Children’s A-Z Book was a personal brief, the aim was to look at howchildren engage and learn through books. The subject of the book is theA-Z of animals, this subject matter lent itself well to the concept behind the book. The concept being of making it interactive and engaging through the use of different print processes. Each of the 26 animals featured in the concertina book have all beenillustrated along with their name and corresponding letter of the alphabet. They are all textured in a way that engages different senses, mainly through touch, sight.
Different print processes have been used such as ocking, foiling, and
different textured papers to create different sensations throughout thebook. The animals have been applied to a range of products to accompany thebook, like the book they are all designed to engage children and help them to learn through design and creativity.
Brief 5Children’s A-Z Book Board 2/5The book features 26 different animals, one for each letter of the alphabet, they have all been hand illustrated and coloured digitally. Their names andcorresponding letter have also been hand drawn with a graphite stick togive an almost childlike effect of drawings done in crayon or potatoprints. This is a selection of some of the animals featured in the book, they allhave been given almost human facial features to give them expression andcharacter, the design of the book is very clean and simple, with the animals to be the main engaging feature, drawing in children and adults a like with their individual characters. As well as being the main feature of the book the animals have been usedacross a range of products, the animals are available in A5 postcard size andA2 poster size, landscape and portrait, which are represented here.
Brief 5Children’s A-Z Book Board 3/5The book is a concertina fold with a wooden front and back cover which isbeen engraved with all the letter from the alphabet on the laser cutter. The book is 15cmx15cm and is printed on GFSmith Natural stock. The illustrations have been digitally printed and then different printprocesses and textured have been applied. Flocking has been used on someof the animals, as seen on the Giraffe, to add a fuzzy, fur like texture. Foil-ing has been used on other animals, as seen on the Penguin and X-Ray Fish to give a shimmer and shine to their appearance. Some animals haveembossed papers added to them to give them texture, for example theElephant and Hippo have been printed on a GFSmith embossed paper,Morocco.
