hat China with its bazillion smoke stacks is the manufacturing hub ofthe world is old news. The assembly line model adopted by ourneighbour has made it an economic juggernaut that holds the stringsof the global economy. Any report of a super-heating or slowdown in theChinese economy sends shudders all across the world and there is always ascramble to stop any such thing from happening. Our cover story this month tells us how the high-tech electronics manufacturingstory has evolved. That mobile device sitting on your desk with its blinking redlight telling you that you have an unread message is in all probability made up ofcomponents from a number of different manufacturers, most of which arelocated near the South China Sea. This is true of any electronic device that you(or pretty much anyone else in the world) own. As the article points out, evensome of the biggest brands have surrendered all of their manufacturing dutiesto contractors and ODMs.I'm a bit old-school, and while I have no problems with what comes from where(as long as it is from a conflict-free zone), I'd definitely be excited to see Indiagaining a stronger foothold in manufacturing. Sitting across the Himalayas, weyearn to be in the position that China is in today, hoping that someday paeanswill eventually be sung about Indian manufacturing prowess. Imagine everyelectronic device in every house in any part of the world stamped with anubiquitous "Made in India" label. Is it possible for India to become a bigger ormore dominant part of this manufacturing matrix, or have we missed this bus?Theoretically, we could emulate China. All we need is the right set of policies topromote manufacturing—like we did for software services—and we could see aproliferation of "Made in India" labels. However, the odds are stacked badly against us. We are firmly stuck within atriumvirate chakravyuh of a desire to have cheaper products, the exorbitantlyhigh R&D investments required to set up these high-tech foundries, and asputtering infrastructure. Do you care about where your gadget ismanufactured? Is the label on the front the only assurance of quality you seek? Will you be happy with any phone as long as it is an Apple or Android product?Read the full story on page 85 and send in your views telling us what you thinkof this complex yet geographically-centred manufacturing network.
