Along Mohamed Sultan Road, just opposite the GalleryHotel and amidst a proliferation of hip and happening joints, is the Book Café. It is an ideal venue fora cosy dinner before heading home. On the menuis a themed buffet spread - and the Alpha Course.Why after-work Alpha? “People tend to be morerelaxed after work and more ready to interact andmake new friends,” explains course leader andinvestment analyst Timothy Wong.The atmosphere at the Book Café is definitely inkeeping with the spirit of Alpha, which is all aboutopenness and friendship. Marie Boon, a teacher andan Alpha veteran, says “It is a very relaxed setting,with comfortable sofas and cushions to lounge on.The atmosphere is very cosy, and that helps ourguests relax and explore the meaning of life.”

At lunchtime, this hip café tuckedaway in a corner of Raffles Place isusually bustling with office workersfrom the surrounding area. It isalso a popular venue for corporateevents and product launches. Butonce a week, the inner section ofthe café is dedicated to Alpha inthe Workplace. Take a peek insidethe function room,you will see guestsmingling over theirbuffet lunch, enjoyinglively discussionsand watching NickyGumbel’s engagingtake on the meaningof life.

for Alpha in the Workplace
Alpha in theWorkplace bringsthe gospel into theworkplace in a friendly and non-threateningmanner, and accomplishes this within thelunch hour, making it an ideal way to reachcolleagues and business associates. It is nowonder that the Alpha in the Workplacecourse in the Telok Ayer area is into its twelfthrun and attracting more people than ever.
The team jointly led by financial planner Peggy Chanand consultant Lawrence Lee were encouraged by theresponse to the latest run. Says Peggy, “On the firstweek, we were expecting about 80 guests, but morethan 100 guests showed up. It was a happy situation.The team refrained from eating so that our guestswould have enough to eat!”Some guests came after receiving the flyer on thatvery day as they were making their way to the hawkercentre. Many were accompanied by their colleagues,who had heard about the course and thought it wouldbe an interesting way to spend their lunch time.“I received the flyer and took the opportunity to askmy colleague. She enjoyed the video. It is also my firsttime on the Alpha Course and I think it is a very non-threatening introduction to the Christian faith,” saysunderwriting and claims executive Lee Lay Har.“The facilitators were also very assuring. I think it’s anexcellent way to spend your lunchtime!”

Queenstown Baptist Church partnerswith Alpha in the Workplace
Pastor Richard Loh, lead pastor of its Englishcongregation, tells Alpha News why he ispassionate about Alpha in the Workplace:“I was a marketplace person for 17 years.
It wasalways my prayer to find a place of ministrywhere people could come to know theLord
. When I became a pastor, I was pleasantlysurprised to discover Workplace Alpha.
It alsoprovides an excellent platform for thechurch to be involved in the marketplace!
 As a church, we provide spiritual coveringand intercessory support for the outreach atTelok Ayer, and a few of our members serve asfacilitators there.”
