Pool Safety
By Tresa Erickson Spending the day at the pool can be great fun for the whole family. Teens can show off their diving skills in the deep end, while younger children play games in the shallow end and tots splash around in the kiddie pool as their par-ents look on. With swim-ming pools comes an ele-ment of risk and the proper precautions must be taken to ensure a safe experience for one and all. Whether you go to a public pool or have one of your own, you need to make safety a priority. Adult supervision is essential, especially with children that cannot swim. Never leave children alone in the pool for a second, even if theyre wearing a lifejacket or a lifeguard is on duty. Nothing is foolproof, especially air-filled swimming aids. Never depend upon rafts and other floating devices to keep children afloat. Use lifejackets and supervise children always. Nothing can replace the ability to swim, not even a lifejacket. If you children dont know how to swim already, teach them or enroll them in a swimming class. Even if your children know how to swim, you may want to enroll them in a class just to ensure they get the proper technique down. It is best not to purchase a pool until your children are old enough to learn how to swim and follow your instructions. This, however, is not always possible. Should you own a pool, you will need to take some measures to ensure no child gets into it unsupervised. A high fence with a self-closing gate and latch high out of young hands reach is a must. Alarms on the gate will let you know when someone has entered the area. A safety cover on the pool will keep individuals from accidentally falling into the pool. You will also need to set up some safety rules for your pool. Post them for all to see and take the time to

enforce them. Public pools generally have safety rules in place. Take the time to go over them with your children and discuss with them why it is not a good idea to run around the pool, dive into the shallow end and so forth. Enforce the rules to the letter; do not fudge. If you are asked not to use certain pool toys, then dont. Even with the proper precautions, accidents can happen. Be prepared by knowing first aid and CPR as well as how to use the safety equipment provided. If you own a pool, make sure you have the proper equipment in place and it is in good condition. Post a list of emergency contacts by the phone and appoint a responsible adult to supervise activities in the pool if you are not available to do so yourself. Once you have finished swimming, gather everyone and everything. Do not leave any toys in the pool. They could entice younger children to enter the water. If you are at your own pool, double-check that everyone is out and secure the gate behind you. A pool of sparkling water on a hot summers day can be a real temptation to child-ren. Be aware of this and take the precautions neces-sary to keep every-one safe in and around the water.

By Tresa Erickson Do your kids like to draw and paint? Do they like to write and act? Put their talents to work and keep them busy this summer with some puppet shows. Putting on a puppet show can be great fun for old and young alike. There are several items your kids will need for their show, most importantly a story. Your kids can make up one on the fly or write up one ahead of time. If you have a child who likes to write, creating a screenplay of sorts might be up their alley. Just make sure they write enough parts for everyone involved. Once your kids have

a story in mind, they can start working on the backdrop for it. Puppet stages are ideal, but not everyone can afford to purchase one or make one from a kit. If budget is an issue, you can go for something a little simpler like a cardboard box dressed up with art supplies or a table draped with fabric. If that wont work, pull a sofa or desk away from the wall, hang up a posterboard to set the scene and voila, youve got an instant puppet stage for your kids to act out their story. Depending upon the story and the type of stage created, your kids might want to add in some props. If the story is set in a family home

and performed on top of table draped in fabric, for example, your daughter might want to decorate the stage with some of her dollhouse furniture. If the story is set in a kingdom, perhaps your son could set up some of his toy castles and horses. Leave it to your kids to decide what props to include, even if some leaves and pinecones from outside to set the scene for a forest. No puppet show would be complete without puppets! You can buy some or help yours kid make their own from inexpensive materials. Old white socks or new paper bags work great for the base. Just have your kids slip the sock or paper bag onto their hand and mark out the face. They can use almost anything they want to bring the face to life, markers, crayons, paint pens. They can even attach some googly eyes, felt ears and yarn hair. Fill the tabletop with supplies and let your kids have at it! Puppets will matter little if you dont have puppeteers. With any luck, your kids have already volunteered for a role. If they havent, now is the time to decide who is playing whom. Keep in mind that it is not uncommon for puppeteers to play more than one role. With the basics in place, your kids can start practicing with their puppets and preparing to perform their show. Theyll need an audience other than you, of course, so dont

hesitate to invite over some of your family, friends and neighbors. Your kids just might have so much fun with it that they put on one show after another, keeping themselves and others entertained all summer long.

Dance to your favorite tunes. Feed the ducks down by the lake. Go window shopping. Invite everyone over for a slumber party. Jump on the trampoline. Listen to some music. Make some crafts. Paint a picture. Plant some flowers. Play some cards or board games. Quiz each other. Read some books. Run through the sprinkler. See a free matinee. Shop local yard sales. Shoot some hoops. Spend the day at the park.

Stop by the farmers market. Take a hike or bike ride. Visit area nursing home residents. Volunteer for an organization. Watch a video. Work in the garden. Write a letter, story or play.

This is just a small sample of the low-cost activities that might be available for you and the kids to do in your area. Check with your chamber of commerce, library and park district for other ideas. Ask your friends and family members. You might just discover that there is more going on than you realized, and it might not cost as much as you might think. Start your search today and take advantage of every opportunity to keep your kids busy and your pocketbook intact this summer.

By Tresa Erickson Its the dead of summer when the days are too hot to do anything but play in the pool. Whether you have a large u n d e rground pool or a small aboveground pool, there are games you can play to keep everyone entertained for much of the day. Here are some suggestions. Beach Ball Relay Race This game works well in a large pool. Players are divided into two teams and take turns racing to the end of the pool and back, pushing the beach ball with their nose. The first team to finish the race wins. Dont Drop the Ducky This game works well for any size of pool. Players attempt to toss around a rubber ducky as quickly as possible without dropping it into the water. Anyone that drops the ducky is out of the game. The player left standing wins the game. Ice Cube Toss This game works well in almost any size of pool. Players toss ice cubes out of the pool using just their toes. Whoever tosses out the most ice cubes wins the game. Marco Polo This game works well in any size of pool. One person is designated Marco Polo, and while blindfolded, attempts to tag others amidst shouts of Polo. The player left standing wins the game. Shark & Minnows This game works well for a mid-sized to large pool. One person is designated the shark and everyone else is a minnow. The minnows attempt to move from one end of the pool to the other without getting tagged or eaten by the shark. The minnow left standing wins the game.

By Tresa Erickson Hot temperatures call for cool fun. What-ever activity youre in-volved in this summer, take caution if it involves water. Sun and water can make for a deadly combination, as water reflects and amplifies the suns rays, increasing the potential for sunburn and other damage. The sun emits three types of rays: UVA, UVB and UVC. The ozone layer prevents UVC rays from entering the earths atmosphere. There is no natural protective barrier against UVA and UVB rays outside of the melanin in your skin, which will absorb some, but not all, of the dangerous rays before any damage occurs. Over time, UVA and UVB rays can lead to premature aging, cataracts, skin cancer and other conditions. Generally, the darker your skin, the more melanin you have and the lower your risk of sun damage. No one, however, has enough melanin to forgo protective measures altogether. For the best results, you should limit your time outdoors when the suns rays are at their harshest, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., although location can also factor into the equation. Higher altitudes in latitudes close to the equator may extend the time period and call for extra protection outside.

Seasonal temperatures may also come into play. Hot temperatures demand diligent sun protection. Cold temperatures with snow and ice demand it as well, as snow and ice reflect and amplify the suns rays just like water. Dont be fooled by cool, cloudy days either. Just because you cant see the sun doesnt mean it isnt
